A good post from the tumble, esp in regards to anything with art. Studying new concepts and techniques is the most fun when you can do it like a dog chewing and shaking a new toy around until you can rip out the squeaker and run through the house triumphantly going SQUIKSQUIKSQUIKSQUIK

The main thing that Cyberpunk has in common with Punk is that they were both going on for like a decade before anyone decided to start calling it that.

We should be calling out the huge blindspots to international games in English games media, but we should also not ignore the fact that with video games we are already pretty damn global, especially compared to, say, the Oscars.

This is not all the way there but it's a decent start!

It really needs to be pointed out how every one of these embarrassing statements is made by a c-suite executive and not an artist or even art department lead
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.

Ok I seriously need help, is there like a big game preservation community hub where I can put out a bounty for someone to archive an overpriced iPhone game so I can emulate it in the future, I really need this

this goes right along with my theory that the AI obsession in *users* is often bc…

1. they were never educated (esp "ipad generation") & don't know how computers work

2. our tools and services are all SO AWFUL NOW, degraded at best, actively user-hostile at worst

the reason people still want to go indie and put themselves at tremendous risk is not wanting to put up with this kind of shit anymore. it's completely insane and completely humiliating how normal it is for companies like this to put people through all kinds of weird torture to prove their worth
3 years ago today, Riot Games offered me a job making more money than I ever thought I’d make in my life. I had 19 interviews over 2.5 months to get it. Partner and I were moving to LA for it. I put in notice at my job and apartment.

2 weeks later they rescinded the offer due to “headcount issues”.

Today we just got 100 new followers and a bunch of people saying "whoa I've never heard of this" re: the game we have been thumping into the ground for the last 3 years by posting one gif from our earliest demo. If you think you post too much about your game: you probably don't!

In Human Factors Psychology this is sometimes known as the "trust in automation" effect

If you automate something then people learn to trust that automation and don't learn skills themselves (and why should they? It's automated!)

This can reduce skill growth and engagement
Rather than informing the player of a consideration they need to have to successfully play the game, you are *offloading* a consideration. That's one less thing the player needs to think about while playing the game.

I'm seeing variants of "ah but today's gamers just don't have attention spans so we sort of have to-" rolled out earnestly so

No. You can let those players fail. The AAA conception of handholding is silly. There's huge genres that don't do it.

You just have a bad manager making you do dumb things.
November 14, 2025 at 10:29 PM
Something about the tutorialization/hand-holding discourse is that *what* you choose to tutorialize and *how* you choose to do it affects the game's contract with the player.

friday soapbox: as a designer, if you want something to be a skillful action for players, and you want growth in this skill to be very deep/meaningful, then you need to also let players be bad at it. sometimes horrendously bad. players hate this pain, and designers often want to mitigate it away.

I'll be honest: dunno that I'm willing to buy a "we HAVE to force tutorialization down players' throats" argument in a period where games like counterstrike, dota, minecraft, roblox et al are some of the most popular games in the world

showed my friend who was visiting town this past weekend the Bob Dylan documentary "No Direction Home" - a personal object of obsession for me. afterwards, she told me that seeing people's responses to Dylan at the time really reinforced to her the benefits of pissing other people off with your art.

Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.
