Awards Season is upon us! My novella Disgraced Return of the Kap’s Needle (19,500 words), a dark space opera set in a generation spaceship returning to Earth after a failed expedition, is eligible as Best Novella in the Nebulas, Hugos, Locus and for Best Shorter Fiction in the BSFA.
😭😭😭
It's our last episode! We're so grateful to everyone who's listened to us for the past 7 years.

We're using this occasion to talk about the state of science fiction and fantasy in the 21st century — and what has shaped the stories we've loved.

Saw someone saying that they're not hopeful about the new Stargate show. According to them, the good about the other shows was that they contained no politics at all.

Man... Stargate-SG1 literally had an episode titled "Politics".

This story starts with a gig. Half a million people from all corners of the galaxy, hands in the air, heads banging to our vibrant noise. You probably saw the venue on some feed already.

Read Patty's work!

(Patty is a must as an author, but Through the Machine is a must in general to understand what AI can do to art!)
I've updated my 2025 awards eligibility post. Also threaded, a little bit about some of my favorite stories I've published this year. One more to come on Dec. 1. As always, you can find links to everything I published this year here: www.pacornell.com/2025-awards-...

A reminder that @henrylienauthor.bsky.social released this book in 2025 and it's a much needed read about exploring other structures for fiction. It's eligible as Best Related Work for the Hugos and Best Non-Fiction for the Locus.
Highly recommend @henrylienauthor.bsky.social's book about Kishōtenketsu (the Japanese name for the classic 4 Act Eastern story structure).

Henry's slim book is concise & entertaining.
Should be in every writer's toolkit!

Yes! Speaking of which, if you acquire my novella now (which appeared in Scalzi's blog, btw!), consider it as a holidays gift to me 🖤😁
If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Recently, I received my author copies of the graphic novel of Anticipation of Hollowness, illustrated by Lorenzo Livrieri and adapted by Michele Paris! They're gorgeous and are out in hardcover and paperback. AoH is a solarpunk piece about gentrification, friendship, and social sustainability.

That short stories exist in the cracks and interstices of the capitalist system is how you know they’re the superior form
Yeah, unfortunately. Outside the world of magazines, anthologies, and small presses sustained by obsessive volunteer labour, the capital-I industry rather does seem to find short stories an unwanted form electricliterature.com/i-love-short...
