I’m trying to cheer myself up with the state of this world. I do have neighbours so I stop myself from screaming out my frustrations!!
This is beyond awful. I don’t like this and I don’t want children growing up in a world where consent is trivialised and ignored.
"And I never say no"

We need to have a serious talk about the way "AI companion" apps not only prey on the vulnerable, but are priming their users to ignore consent and to conflate love with control.

We need AI regulations across so many sectors, but this area is particularly horrifying.

Ah, fuck! Good point - good heads up!
PSA: Now is a good time to gather all your hammers and test them for maximum smashing capabilities in case you have any well-intentioned in-laws gifting your children a chatbot-integrated toy. You don’t want to be caught with a less-than-perfect hammer for smashing those abominations!

Can never be said *enough* IMO, at any time, let alone during *this* period.

The speed limit *is not a target*... our roads *are not your private race track*... which means no, you're definitely not Bruce McLaren or Hayden Paddon, no matter how many times you've "aced" that game.

I don’t need advice about what to read or not read unless it’s an affirmative recommendation, thanks. I am a whole ass adult who makes my own decisions for my own reasons.

Good read on predictive AI and gen AI
Was really challenging to participate in this, but I think I was able to pen something real, important, and personal to my experience in AI. Remember that GenAI is not *all* of AI nor all of what it should be.

If I hear one more person refer to Gen Z or Gen Alpha as digital natives when the students do not know:

1. How to use built-in Word functions like outlining and spellchecker
2. The different types of basic files
3. Interoperability
4. The issues related to uploading

I don't need regurgitation. I don't need memorization.

I need application. I need integration.

Don't tell me what I told you. Or what AI told you.

Tell me how those things apply to the world around you.

Empower yourself to take on the world with these ideas, skills I am teaching you.

It removes one of the best realities about academia. That it’s a Conversation among reality explorers. No one person understands it all or has all the monopoly on Truth. That’s a good thing.

FWIW, the jury is still out on Gen AI being good at text summaries. Because it shortens & emphasizes text based on distribution, not meaning, it’s less of a summary (ie, salient points highlighted) than a compression (ie, the most frequently asserted terms in the distribution). Not the same thing!

my little spiel to early-on graduate students who are anxious how to get a good idea is that first, something has to bother you. and nothing is more bothersome than an absence or a vacancy
I'm preaching to the choir here, but I read articles to find what's not being said and where I need to keep digging. And that's something a generated summary cannot provide.

similar for me - my mom has an enormous library of books, many of them fiction, because her degree was in Latin American Lit, but also criticism and theory. And she didn't continue in research, so she didn't stay up on new work in the field, but she did that PhD BECAUSE SHE LOVED READING THOSE BOOKS
A formative experience for me as a child was seeing the personal library my mom (a Ph.D) kept in her study and asking how many of those hundreds of books she had actually read all the way through, and her very matter-of-fact-my explaining how and why she had read *all* of them, *multiple times*

The last six years here and worldwide has taught me that some people waste way too much time focused on hate. Hating groups. Hating individuals. Hating themselves.

Imagine how much more productive and less violent society would be if that energy was put into something good.

And i’ve said before, guilt is useless and can easily curdle into resentment. A sense of moral obligation and solidarity on the other hand, can be productive.

I do this too. I also delete work apps during annual leave & long weekends. I have my phone on do not disturb most of the time so I don’t get any notifications or even phone calls except for the few people who can bypass them. In saying that I still think about work+study & read related stuff lol
One thing I’ve been doing for some time now, is while I have outlook & teams installed on my iPhone & iPad, I NEVER allow notifications, not even badges, for them. I can access them if I need to, but they don’t get to notify me of anything.

On my work Mac, notifications are allowed, but only if …
One thing I am doing as I head toward 2026 is turning off notifications in apps.
No one needs instant access to me and my energy in that way.
We have been conditioned to be on and accessible 24/7 and it's bullshit.
