if you’re an academic who uses AI to crank out research, you should have to give up your position to one of the more worthy candidates who didn’t get a TT job
I am not sorry. This is simply true. Academics should be able to write fluently and express themselves clearly and academics should do their own work. It’s literally our job. It’s what we trained until 22nd grade to do. This is a simple observation that should require no explanation or defense.
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

the problem with machine that spits out answers is that when you do research to find a fact, you're also learning about the entire context around it as well as the conversations scholars have about it. all that "wasted" time is developing an actual understanding of how the fact fits into the world.

Glad to see folks starting to realize this - but it's not about Google or Meta.

LLMs aren't good at anything that isn't extremely over-represented in their public training data. Contexts are still small.

Only continuous-learning AI will ever be actually useful, but today's LLMs are just bad.
Interesting: I am hearing both inside Meta and inside Google AI coding models simply don't work nearly as well as they do outside:

Models work great on greenfield projects and when using standard tooling.

Both Meta and Google have monoliths and non-standard tooling!

In the end, it won’t be power brokers or politicians who save us — it will be wisdom, the kind that bends low, walks with the poor, and welcomes the stranger.

So I tried using the latest LLMs again, figured I'm hearing how awesome they are, so why not.

15 mins later...

"STOP REIMPLEMENTING FEATURES from the library I told you to use, integrate them instead"

Never mind, I'll try again in 6 months 😄 This is laughably bad.

I feel a real despair about our present moment because it seems like they're destroying both the subjective conditions for liberation (the capacity to think and connect with others) and the objective conditions for liberation (the ecosystem).

no matter how much they read about the past, people rarely seem to internalize the idea that their self-conception is shaped by contemporary culture and society in such a way that prevents them from seeing all sorts of things that later historians will consider to be obvious.

The Epstein Class has to go.

My bill legally requires DOJ to release the files in 7 days by December 19th.

Any attempts to scrub, coverup, or conceal the truth is subject to prosecution.
🚨 BREAKING: Oversight Dems received 95,000 new photos from Jeffrey Epstein's estate. These disturbing images raise even more questions about Epstein and his relationships with some of the most powerful men in the world.

Time to end this White House cover-up. Release the files!

That “meritocracy“ is now weaponized against straw man arguments about identity politics in an explicitly exclusionary way and proselytized by nerds not even from America let alone California should be called out as hypocrisy

But that would require some self reflection/awareness
