Why don’t I know this?

“Edinburgh … is trying to become a million-tree city by 2030.”

I live here, I’m interested in nature and pay attention to local news. I have never heard of this ambition.

Is it poor comms? Going stealth in fear of anti-wokery?

My latest blog combines my interest in #satellite imagery visualisation with mobile app development in #Flutter! I built an app designed to browse natural colour images from the #Sentinel-2 satellite. I share how to build it in the blog, along with the code on GitHub.

Today is International Fairy Day!

The Sìth 'fairies' appear in many Gaelic place-names, such as Coignashie ~ Còig nan Sìth (buff.ly/Of2nMFK).

Do you know sìth place-names?

As part of my latest adventures building with #Flutter, I've made a blog post to share how to change font size of text in the DateRangePicker. A small thing but it took me ages to figure out from the text heavy doc. I’ve made a visual guide instead to hopefully help others!

Part of learning about Scottish Place Names with @sabhalmorostaig.bsky.social & @ainmean-aite.bsky.social is looking at old maps 😍!

Pont’s maps of Scotland were published late 1500s, & are a valuable resource for place name study. Here’s a snippet from Torridon area:

Really enjoying learning about space data! 🛰️

Some homework was to browse NASA’s Earth Observatory for interesting data, so I looked at Landsat 9 OLI-2 data for the Reykjanes peninsula eruption in November last year 🌋

Having fun building a green space dataset of Edinburgh, using mostly OSM, OS + Edinburgh City Council open data 🌳💚 this includes trees, parks, golf courses + privately owned green space.

Spot the Murrayfield Stadium green to the middle left! 🏉

Went for a winter tree ID refresher walk over lunch 👀

Sycamore has bark platelets/scales on its trunk, ranging from light pink to brown to light green (depending on lichen content). The just emerging buds are arranged in opposite pairs, and last years delicate flower stems may still be visible. 🌳
