[COMMENTARY]

“This is the Amazon COP. If it ends with a decision that ignores Indigenous rights and props up offset markets that science says cannot work, it will squander the moral clarity of this moment,” a new op-ed argues.

It’s time to end the carbon offset era, COP30 scientists & communities say (commentary)
At COP30 in Belém, the first climate summit held in the Amazon, something rare has happened. For years, the risks and failures of carbon offsetting have been dismissed as activist exaggeration or…

I cannot even begin to unpack how disappointed I have been that so many colleagues doing research on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change in US agriculture have been squandering their time to produce small science that just parrots and validates industry talking points. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
Not doing 💩 science that benefits the fossil fuel lobby and big ag would not hurt too in my field lol

It's pretty much the same for US environmental policy these days. Prof. Saideman explains how he has pivoted in the 🧵.
I've had to do it too. How?
1) teaching the theory of environmental policy mechanisms
2) focus on implementation past and present and distributional impacts. 1/
Why do i bother teaching US foreign policy? No process, no institutions.

I know there’s much to be appalled about these announcements (and some of it looks pretty illegal to me) but what really gets me is that again GOP politicians are spewing falsehoods about the Clean Water Act and agriculture even after SCOTUS gutted WOTUS.
Ag is pretty much exempt from the CWA. Sigh.

I'm still amazed that growing up in Italy all the abusivi (unauthorized) homes too close to beaches, on floodplains, not up to code etc. were seen as evidence that we were not a proper Global North country and in the US they build right on the beach and it's all good and legal and worth millions.

A comprehensive rundown of the #COP30 shenanigans from @roycerk2.bsky.social. From what I saw, the Colombians were the only ones whose negotiators and civil society groups were on the same page, and they carried the whole world on their shoulders.

Teaching is the profession that lays the foundation for all other professions.

Insulting, yes, but also outrageously reckless given teacher alienation policies that have already led to a teacher recruitment and retention crisis nationwide.

Seeing several people who have been complicit in cropaganda in multiple ways through the years going out there pretending to be conservation heroes.
I suppose it might be a sign that the wind is shifting, but then again it could be the next grift.

Mamdani completely owns this moment and the beauty is knowing that it's not because he's planning to run for president
Q: Just days ago you referred to Trump as a 'despot.' Will you retract?

MAMDANI: We're both very clear on our positions & what I really appreciate about the president is our meeting focused not on places of disagreement but shared purpose we have

TRUMP: I've been called much worse than a despot

I am having the most surreal afternoon reviewing a paper with about half of its citations non-existent - hallucinations summoned by some artificial something something. The paper reads right though it is very thin on theory and rather superficial. Not looking forward to more of this sleuthing.

A GOP lawmaker in South Dakota admits the truth: agriculture is a major source of water pollution, and “voluntary conservation” isn’t solving it.

Something you can’t get Illinois’ Democratic supermajority—or many environmental groups—to admit.
