I was one of two Black women in the Ph.D. program. I will never forget my first semester of grad school, one of my profs went OFF on the class before the midterm about cheating, calling out a specific demographic for large-scale cheating and threatening the class if we knew and didn’t tell.

I've been thinking about this all day, because so much of my career has been spent being not truly "one of us," and I'm only beginning to come to some kind of terms with how painful it has been.
If you're always an inspector at the end/external to/outside of the "core group" you're seen as not truly belonging, not truly "one of us," especially in organizations that are doing a bad job of protecting their dissenters and divergent thinkers (many tech orgs, ofc)

What Ashley's understating is she ran a free community event where scientists tell stories in one of San Diego's hopping neighborhoods and they absolutely packed the house of a woman-led business (Bivouac Ciderworks!) and the entire thing was a delight

We did all of this at our SASSY "Little Lab of Horrors" event this week and I am so, so proud of our storytellers and the work we put into this.

I’d love to have anti citations though. Like I don’t want paper analyzers to know that I cited something, I wanted them to know that I anti cited it. I called it out cause it was bad and it deserved to feel bad and I want it to not get cited going forward
I encounter this constantly in software writing too. People bitch: why didn't you cite x old book? Because. It was bad. And I disagree with it. Because I have a threshold for quality, sorry!

tuned into some of the nunavut election broadcast and it was so cool to see how seamlessly they switched between english and (what i assume was) inuktitut. we should really be hearing more of the indigenous languages in canada.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

i ask myself this a lot vis-à-vis sense atlas and intertwingler, and i can say that both address otherwise (literally) un-addressable problems i encountered both as an FTE and as a consultant; as such my answer to 1) is it'll be wrong until it isn't and 2) is adjust until that happens…
There are two questions I ask people making a product bet:
1) How will you know if you were wrong?
2) What can you do if you're wrong?
The answers for a bad bet are "we won't" and "nothing."
And that's exactly what big tech is doing: rushing forward with eyes closed and fingers in their ears.
