As a kid I won a contest through my high school library, and for the prize I got to pick any book I wanted. I picked one of the few Kurt Vonnegut books I hadn’t read yet. I’ll never forget that librarian and what that relationship meant to me.
Anyone who's afraid their children might be better informed and better educated than they are should not be parents in the first place.

Deaf and blind as synonyms for ignorant ("fell on deaf ears" or "turned a blind eye to").
Crutch as a bad thing.

Sentences come in all different shapes and sizes—it’s more interesting that way and can keep the reader from getting bored.
