2005, teaching sophomore English in a smallish town, my Black student would tell me every time the cops followed and harassed him, despite knowing damned well who he was and what he was about (Honors student! Track star!)…those asshole cops dgaf then and they’ve only gotten worse.
Unfortunately, this is the part where I remind people that Black 10th graders get beat up by cops every day.
This is the part where I remind people about modern civil asset forfeiture, where US police steal more value from people (mostly Black) than every form of theft other than wage theft.

I would imagine it is a uniquely American experience to enjoy a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning while listening to the sounds of gunshots from neighbors to the north and south who enjoy shooting things for fun on the weekends.
