a certain ferrari chairman pissed me off so bad that i went and wrote half an essay
imagine you've dedicated yourself to a team your entire life. you've suffered and struggled with them, carried them on your back when they were at their worst, loved them even when the love wasn't reciprocated. repeatedly demonstrated your loyalty, even when it required sacrificing your own results and reputation. the latest weekend arrives and you work and push and deliver seemingly beyond what the laws of physics dictate are possible. that's what you've always done - make miracles happen even when you're given almost nothing to work with. it's been a season of disappointment but hell if you're not going to keep your head high and try to get the best results every time anyways. then the day comes for you to try and reap the fruits of your labour, and before you've even had the chance to work your magic, you're taken out through no fault of your own. you can do absolutely nothing as he crashes into you and this car you've been wrangling for months now just falls apart around you. all that work for nothing, and it's almost cruelly symbolic. despite your frustration being obvious on your sleeve, you stay level headed in your response, never the one to be cruel even under cruel circumstances. then, just as you're ready to put this latest disappointment behind you, the company chairman, who cannot be further removed from the grind and emotion of the sport, puts you and your racing partner's heads publicly on the proverbial platter. you're not dedicated enough, you're not focused enough, you're too selfish, you don't care enough. you - the man who's been the steadfast embodiment of this team's hopes and dreams. "it's clear that unity can help us turn [the situation] around," you say, because you know what it means to care so excruciatingly deeply, and what it means to unite those you love around a dream, even if countless critics, pundits, reporters, even higher ups in your own team don't seem to see it.

I LOVE how Charles Leclerc kills people with kindness. He always does it so flawlessly and professionally too. Posts his Brazil recap starting with a photo of Fred, followed by a full focus on the Ferrari symbol and then finishes his caption with a call for unity within Ferrari. It is such a clear response to Elkann without needing to resort to unprofessionalism like his CEO did. And this is why people in that team come and go, but they do not manage to succeed in getting Charles out of there, cause he's smarter and cares more about that team and protecting it than anyone else.

There's always drama surrounding Ferrari. It's the price of being the most successful and popular team in motorsports history. But because it's so common, a lot of it is talked about for a day and then dies down. It's not gonna be the case with Elkann's comments for several reasons. First of all, he did this in a week where there isn't gonna be any racing and after a grand prix where there wasn't any major drama, certainly nothing that could fuel motorsports publications for the next 2 weeks. Elkann handed a story to them on a silver platter with a bow. Second, Lewis and Charles are two of the drivers most used to having to shut outside noise out. Lewis has had to do it his entire career because of how many people have tried to take him down just because he isn't a white man. Charles has had to do it because he has consistently been the target of journalists trying to exploit the things he has gone through in his personal life. But this isn't outside noise. This is the CEO of the brand they represent unfairly attacking them and outright lying. It's impossible to ignore. I'm not trying to predict any long term consequences or short term for that matter, I don't believe for a second it's gonna affect how either of them perform for the rest of the season, but this is another thing on their plate, on top of all the things piling up from a difficult season, that the CEO chose to put on them because he needs scapegoats for his incompetence. And third, there's no possible PR spin anyone can put on this. Elkann was direct and left no room for misinterpretation. There's no "missing context" that will shut people up. Elkann's only way out is an apology, which will generate even more noise. It's quite ironic how perhaps the biggest scandal a team so obsessed with their image has had in years was caused by none other than their own CEO. But is it surprising to anyone who knows this team? No. Binotto was allowed to treat Seb like he wasn't even a part of Ferrari. He was allowed to give up on Charles' championship when Charles had more than proven if given the tools he could take it to the end. And it took Ferrari almost losing Charles for things to change. I hope it's at least clear to more people now how things were allowed to get to that point.

I don't think this is gonna go through Charles' head but he could not be blamed if he wanted to leave after hearing Elkann say this stuff. It's not just some words. Charles went through HELL in 2022, had offers to leave, and chose to trust Ferrari when Ferrari did not deserve any of his trust. 1/

Elkann's statement is a disgrace. It's a disgrace if it's about Charles, it's a disgrace if it's about Lewis, it's a disgrace if it's about the both of them. It is completely disrespectful to the work the team has done, including the drivers, to protect everyone and handle the criticism together
