Living the car-free dream in Philly. Philly public school parent. Brompton Bicycles are the ultimate urban life hack. I only really care about Philly issues; it’s not my job to provide context to my posts for non-Philly folks.
I don’t know if this already means I have too much crap but I’m getting so annoyed by all the Black Friday ads because I have no interest in buying any of it!

The only BF promo I’ve acted on was the Philadelphia Film Society’s 15% off deal for annual memberships! filmadelphia.org/support-us/m...

Feels like everyone is trying so hard to sell me shit this weekend. I literally don’t want to buy anything on Black Friday.

Beautiful new red bus/bike lanes! I’m a huge fan of these on streets where there isn’t room for a separated protected bike lane.

Arguably should do this on Washington Ave, especially as the 64 bus is going high frequency with the revamped bus network.

This is what we have to resort to in the sixth largest city in America because for some reason they can’t just sweep the fucking streets. Remind me again what my city wage tax pays for?
The guys used to sweep the street with janitor brooms, “just so our kids could come out and play without glass around,” Masucci said.

“Neighbors would be like, ‘Oh, it’s nice, but it’s really dusty,’ and I’d be like, ‘God! There’s gotta be a better way,’” he said.

These South Philly dads bought personal street sweepers for their block: ‘It’s like a little Zamboni’
The German device isn't marketed for street cleaning, but when brooms weren't enough to keep their kids safe from broken glass and debris on their block, these three men got ingenious with it.

Our household had a gross income of less than $136k in 2025 dollars when we had two young kids in NYC. We made it work. We weren’t saving much for retirement, bc we also had student debt to pay off.

My wife stayed at home, so that cut childcare costs and we didn’t own a car so that helped!
People saying the analysis is BS? Which bit is wrong? Which of these items do you think you could cut?
Childcare: $32,773
Housing: $23,267
Food: $14,717
Transportation: $14,828
Healthcare: $10,567
Other essentials: $21,857
Required net income: $118,009
Gross income: ~$136,000

This is a great story. I love what these guys are doing. But the takeaway shouldn’t be that we need to enable more people to clean their streets.

Keeping our streets clean is the city’s job and one that Philly has failed at. This is a basic function of a city govt! www.inquirer.com/columnists/k...

Spending a week and a half in Paris and Madrid really drives home the point that the (American-ish) concept of a "one-seat ride" is overrated, and frequent headways at nearly all hours of the day is the true gold standard.

Ever since my oldest son took the psat last year, I’ve been getting spam from small liberal arts colleges I’ve never heard of. I don’t know how these schools survive.

I hope it doesn’t mean my son’s scores were so bad, he’s not getting spammed by the good schools. 😁

Disney+ is on sale for Black Friday BUT don't give in! Don't forget how they treated Jimmy Kimmel.

The whole CK thing took longer to blow over than most news stories but it eventually did. ABC/Disney could've just held out for a few more days but instead, they showed themselves to be spineless.

Minneapolis punches way above its weight in terms of its local economy, public transit, bike infrastructure, cultural institutions, parks, and more. And you get all this for one of the lowest costs of living for a US city.

Five years ago, my family was deciding to move to Minneapolis or Philly. We chose Philly. Did we make the wrong choice? :)

Just kidding. We love it here. Minneapolis would've been great too. Perhaps there's a parallel universe where we moved to Minneapolis and another where we stayed in Hoboken.
Minneapolis has been named one of the world’s most bike-friendly cities! A new report covering 100 cities in 44 countries ranked Minneapolis as the #2 biking city in the U.S., #5 in North America and #44 globally. Learn more: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/news/2025/november/2025-bike-friendly-city/

Transit works best in high density cities and neighborhoods. That’s kinda obvious but when you hear folks complain about why their bus/train to and from low density areas is so infrequent and unreliable… well yeah, sorry.

I made my kid go to school even though he’s recovering from the flu/cold. He has an audition for the All City orchestra that he can’t make up. 😢 He’s going to have to go Michael Jordan and pull out a flu game performance.

Fortunately we still have a stash of masks so he doesn’t get others sick.

It was my dog Springsteen’s lucky day. We ran out of dental treats and PetSmart has a buy 3, get 2 free sale so I stocked up to try some different varieties.

I told him to pick one to try first and it seemed like he understood the task. 😁

I got a Baby Taylor almost 20 years ago as a travel guitar. Didn’t end up playing it much and as my kids were growing up, I was hoping they’d want to learn with it.

It’s taken a while but my 13yo finally seems interested so I let him keep the guitar in his room. 🥰

It's kinda crazy how hard it is to find a free one-page PDF with basic major and minor guitar chords on a website that isn't full of ads or makes you give them your email address first.

I should just make one and put it on my website.

I dunno... this guy is from Newark and worked at the Met. He's essentially a New Yorker. How dare we hire an NYC transplant to lead the PHILADELPHIA Museum of Art???? /s
The Philadelphia Art Museum has named Daniel H. Weiss as its new CEO and director. His resume includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art and local colleges.
