Living the car-free dream in Philly. Philly public school parent. Brompton Bicycles are the ultimate urban life hack. I only really care about Philly issues; it’s not my job to provide context to my posts for non-Philly folks.
Most museum memberships and the film society membership are partially or fully tax deductible!

Instead of buying stuff for friends and family this holiday season, I highly recommend getting them memberships to arts and cultural institutions like the film society, museums, etc.

Added bonus this year—depending on your financial situation, you may be able to itemize deductions this year!

Some of that is unavoidable in our society, but the more you can reject the notion of "keeping up with the Joneses", the quicker you'll get to a place of financial stability and actually be able to build savings.

Don't get me wrong--I didn't consider myself poor but even with a "white collar" IT job, I felt like we were just getting by.

Another factor in "feeling" poor is that even if you're able to increase your earnings, your preferences end up moving upmarket, eating away at most of the new income.

That sounds about right. People forget housing costs should include property taxes, maintenance, homeowners insurance, etc. if you own—it’s a lot more than just the mortgage!

Love the sarcasm in these Reddit replies about this article...

There are lots of politicians, city employees, and residents who don’t appreciate how much of Philly functions because of how many good hearted people fill the gaps for services the city is supposed to provide.

These good people are being taken for granted.

Similar to park friends groups, there needs to be a better balance between “we’ll do this free work because we care about our neighborhood” and “we are demanding our city do their jobs that our taxes are paying for!”

Otherwise, the city relying on free volunteer labor becomes the status quo.

The city should do regular street sweeping (yes, you need to move your car!), have public garbage cans on every corner, consider centralized containerized curbside garbage collection, etc.

People in Minneapolis embrace the cold though! The parks dept freezes over parks across the city for ice skating in the winter. www.shsoutherner.net/news/2024/12...
Minneapolis parks set to open ice rinks just in time for winter break
One of the most popular activities to do during the winter in Minnesota is to go ice skating outdoors. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board floods many different parks each winter, creating ice f...

The main thing holding it back is the weather. If people weren't such babies about cold weather, it'd be a no-brainer to consider moving to Minneapolis.

Instead, people opt for boring, sterile, sprawling car-dependent hell holes like Phoenix or Dallas. 🤷

Minneapolis currently isn't dense enough for my tastes. Chicago is the only real city in the Midwest in my opinion, but Minneapolis has the greatest potential to become the Midwest's 2nd great city. It might take 20-30 years to get there though. Just in time for my retirement. :)
