Nashville feels like THE movie. It has a cast of dozens, if not hundreds, it's long, its story spans multiple plots and even more characters and the only film that I feel that matches its scope is PTA's Magnolia. It feels like an attempt to encapsulate the United Staes of America in a single film.

Anniversary has got to be one of the most uncomfortable movies I've seen in years. There are some scenes in films that make you want to peel your face off. Well, imagine a whole movie of such moments. Depicting a rise of a fascist regime through a lens of an upper-class family where...

Conversely, I'd like to offer up a very recent example of @rianjohnson.bsky.social using studio embargo notes to say something very cool, human, and most notably _respectful_ of the craft, skill, and love of the people who write professionally about art.

I have seen Wicked: For Good and I don't really have anything smart to add. Yep, the stories of the second act of Wicked being noticeably weaker are true - For Good doesn't flow that well. Yep, Ariana Grande kinda has nothing to do, but her and Cynthia Erivo do their hardest to make this film work.

This whole thing has been a wild experience. Outsourcing right-wing propaganda slop is not exactly news but seeing the sheer scale of this operation is wide-opening.
Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

I love sports' fans. They talk like some tennis player is awful, barely able to hold a racquet in their hands and they were only able to succeed in the past because of sheer dumb luck and a tournament draw collapsing. At the same time, the said player has won so many Grand Slams that they are...

I was looking at the list of films leaving Criterion Channel on November 30th and one of those is Joyland. If you haven't seen it yet, you should ABSOLUTELY check it out - probably one of the best movies of this decade.

This is a completely unsubstantiated claim, but I choose to believe this message is a direct result of the Pope meeting with Gaspar Noé and Paolo Sorrentino.
He said "Amen" straight into the drop

Lmao Pope Leo threw a rave for an archbishop's 75th birthday this is kind of incredible

When watching McCabe & Ms. Miller last week I got some serious doubts if I actually like Altman's films. Seeing 3 Women I remembered the issue wasn't Altman but the genre of western, because 3 Women rules. Completely original and surprising, its dream-like atmosphere keeps you on your toes.

A movie that I feel is surprisingly foundational in my taste in cinema. I really need to rewatch it soon.
This week on @podcastlikeits The 2000s @emilystjams.bsky.social and I continue our Mike Nichols’ miniseries by talking Closer with @seanfennessey.bsky.social! We discuss theatrical adaptations, Natalie Portman’s 2004 and why every character in this is pretty much a terrible human being.

One of the problems with bluesky is that it's so US-centric that liberals start revealing their inner sociopathy without pushback
I hate this sort of meme.

“The only difference between the parties is whether the power to destroy human civilization rests in the hands of leaders who think gays, women, and black people should have their rights acknowledged.”

Even if true, how is Rainbow B-52 not infinitely preferable?

With Polish society becoming more diverse with each passing month, there is a huge dearth of immigrant narratives in Polish media. Listy z Wilczej (Letters from Wolf Street) is too small to be THE answer to this problem, but it is a great starting point. Taking place almost entirely on...
