Here’s the situation in the Twin Cities:

Random Bovino-style tear-gassing: Way down

Relentless persecution of immigrants: Unchanged

Thuggish violence against observers: Way up

This is how it should be in the US!
The Brazilian federal police detained me for an hour as I had once overstayed a visa by accident for two weeks.

After giving me a lecture on immigration policies, they released me.

If I had been a Brazilian in the United States, I'd be in jail.

Brazilian Federal Police Detain Melk, But Release Him After Lecture on Immigration Policies
The Brazilian federal police officer immediately started joking with me, “What do you think, we were gonna throw you in jail? We’re not ICE, we’re Brazilians.”

Ohhh this makes sense.
By the way, for those of you not in MN: Homan’s strategy was to withdraw some agents, so it felt like we were in the denouement of the crisis, and then escalate hard against observers. They’re being incredibly aggressive with observers now. National media may not want to check out just yet

I need to log off.
I only know them tangentially so can’t say for sure, but I think YT in general selects for a sort of self-made indie style (at best earnestly scruffy and direct; at worst either irony-poisoned and self-hating, or obnoxiously self-promoting) that wouldn’t jive well with the Muppet Theater.

Cursed thought I have to get out of my brain: right-wing media is going to try to run the Sydney Sweeney “woke libs won’t let themselves admit this woman is hot” routine with the next teen actress who blows up.

I am holding to my rule that I will not be making any 2028 primary takes yet bc we just started year 2 and the Dem electorate is already at “Moreover, ICE must be destroyed”.

But I’m allowed to hope.
my 2028 primary take here is that if AOC makes a serious run it's hers to lose because I think she will be able to most credibly channel the rage of the primary voters
You know a politician is thinking about running for president when they start making moves on foreign policy: AOC will be headed to the Munich Security Conference and will speak in Berlin with a member of Germany's Social Democratic Party.

I’ll always have a soft spot for Jared McCain but yeah, four picks is too much to pass up for a sixth man.

Good for him probably winning a championship this year.

What if this phenomenon is part of the great stats/experience Stancil Discontinuity? One part of the population is doing fine overall; one part is acutely worried about underinvestment phenomena, one about investment-deluge phenomena.
I am once again thinking about how the decline and/or demographic shift of small-town America that undergirds a ton of Trumpist racial anxiety is probably the flip side of the affordability crisis in desirable urban areas. Someone with more time than me should write something about this.

These are good demands. The bodycams thing is getting the headlines on here but that’s burying the lede. These are good demands.

@governor.pa.gov do you know what time it is?
It's not even a matter of moderation, liberalism, or whatnot here in 2026. It's a simple matter of perceptional acuity, even if this test is one many Dem pols seem to fail:

*Do you know what time it is?*

Spanberger appears to know what time it is, and appears to govern her choices accordingly.
Spanberger is a moderate Democrat who used to work for the C.I.-fucking-A. It should put the actions of Schumer and Jeffries into perspective for everyone. Are they Republicans? Because they sure act like it.

They need to get the fuck out.

NEW: Abigail Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program.

This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE.

Big, big move by the governor within weeks of coming into office.

I think one thing people outside Minnesota don't understand is that after Good and Pretti were killed by feds while observing, the most normal people you could imagine have made peace with the fact that they could be next, and they are still out there because they say it's the right thing to do.
“If I am killed doing this, throw my body at the White House, martyr the shit out of me & raise hell. Do not be sad. Do not think I would do anything differently. I would do it over & over again — this is too important to sit down & shut up and not do anything.” www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

Yep, and IIRC we’re talking about like a 20%-25% reduction. A great first step!
Fewer armed goons roaming residential streets is a good thing, period
Breaking News: Tom Homan, President Trump’s border czar, said he would pull 700 immigration agents out of Minneapolis.

Absolutely this.
I think disbanding BORTAC and the ICE & CBP SRT units would be a good down payment toward full abolition that would significantly reduce the murder rate.
February 3, 2026 at 10:13 PM
The tires of the DoJ are slipping and Trump is going to keep stomping on the gas.
This is unreal. An AUSA talking like that in open court is about as close as you can come to a total breakdown. Never heard of anything like it.

It’s both IMO. “Obscene wealth” and “no regard for the fundamental humanity of others” form a reinforcing feedback loop.
You can look at the Epstein files and conclude that only bad people have billions of dollars, but I think it’s also possible that having billions of dollars cauterizes your humanity
