In this fraught time, it's inspiring to see Oregon high school students stepping up to discuss and debate our foundational constitutional principles, as they are being tested and under threat like never before. Shout out to the students from McDaniel High School featured!

As politics roil the nation, Oregon students compete to make sense of the U.S. Constitution and find solutions
Nearly 200 high schoolers participated in the civic championship at Multnomah County Courthouse with federal judges among those evaluating their constitutional knowledge.

The Skanner's closure is a profound loss—an irreplaceable Black-owned institution holding power to account & serving communities too often ignored. I’m championing Protect Local Journalism (SB1580) to ensure Big Tech pays its fair share so community media survives & thrives.

Happy first Wise Wednesday of the 2026 session!

Things are moving quickly: we heard the most recent revenue forecast and have been busy since we kicked off on Monday. I'm looking forward to getting as much done as possible during this short session.

Thanks for tuning in!

Today, we announced our policy agenda that responds to the growing concerns of BIPOC Oregonians about the violent and cruel tactics of the Trump administration. In a critical moment for the state, we are ready to meet it head on with bold policy actions.

This legislative session, I'm introducing legislation to help build upon the City of Portland's successes with their Inclusionary Housing program, creating greater flexibility for cities to implement similar programs while installing guardrails to ensure we continue to build more homes. #orleg
3) Tell his housing bureau to drop its opposition to LC 5, @senkhanhpham.bsky.social's bill modernizing the state's inclusionary zoning statute.

It'd give cities more options for mixed-income buildings while ending the possibility that poorly designed or bad-faith policies block future homes.

DHS opened fire in a residential Portland neighborhood, blocks from our District Senator’s home.

That is not public safety.

It is a dangerous abuse of power by a federal agency operating without accountability.

Enough is Enough.

We stand with our colleagues, Sen. Jama, Rep. Valderrama, and Rep. Wise, as our state reckons with the reality of two Oregonians shot violently by federal agents. We are heartbroken by this act of brutality, and our thoughts are with loved ones as the victims are hospitalized.

Rep. Nelson on news of the latest healthcare merger!
I’ll be watching this transaction carefully. I have many friends in the Tacoma area & the vast majority of the people I know have little good to say about MultiCare. On the other hand, Samaritan Health has a great reputation! This deal warrants a thorough HCMO review.

Vice Chair Nelson at the Eyes of Hope Event. ✨
I recently stopped by VSP Vision Care’s Eyes of Hope Event in Washington County. The clinic provided eye exams and glasses to approximately 50 individuals in Beaverton. To date, VSP has assisted more than 22,000 Oregonians through its Eyes of Hope program.

In Beaverton schools, tracking absenteeism — and the impacts of the immigration crackdown — in real time
Oregon’s chronic absenteeism data is, ironically, released too late to be of much use in the current school year. So the Beaverton school district built its own attendance dashboard.

Disappointed to see the IBR team once again deferred providing an updated cost estimate.

I am concerned the ongoing cost-escalation will make it difficult to complete this project while also finding funding to maintain existing statewide roads and bridges. #orleg
