A clarification on this week's #MeasureHLA hearings. A few people were wondering why I appealed "good" projects: Hollywood Blvd protected bike lanes, Roscoe bus lanes, San Vicente & Mission Rd bike lanes, etc. Well... it's complicated...

The problem is if you want to do transit advocacy in the USA you do really need to know what a shoefly is, and weird shit about fire safety, and a million other things.
I'm guessing 10% of the people in this room were looking for this level of detail. A phrase comes to mind (build the damn trains, I don't need to know what a shoofly is.)

We don't enforce traffic laws by asking drivers to go drive to a different street after catching them. So when Metro enforces fares by telling an already tiny percentage of fare evaders to please step off the vehicle, we shouldn't be surprised that nearly half of riders respond by not paying.

Today, at the @metrolosangeles.bsky.social Ops meeting, CEO Stephanie Wiggins mentioned the recent op-ed I co-authored documenting Metro's 5-year suspension of regular fare enforcement. While she dismissed the piece as "erroneous", she could not point to one factually incorrect thing in the op-ed.
CEO speaks about "erroneous" recent Daily News editorial that noted lack of fare enforcement (written by @alexdavistransit.bsky.social & others). CEO & Metro Police Chief speak about "many ways to engage" riders, kicking non-paying riders off the system without citations.

Battery electric buses are not ready for primetime, and we need to reverse BEB mandates before they result in disastrous service cuts
“The new timetable assumes each bus will spend nearly 45% of its runtime idling at BART (or about 6.2 hours of a 14 hour shift).

It is hard to escape the conclusion that the timetable is being designed around the limitations of the aging [BEB] capacity.”

Angelenos, have you ever felt like LA Metro literally doesn't care about collecting fares? Well, it's not your imagination! In the LA Daily, we break down LA Metro's quiet 5-year suspension of fare and code of conduct enforcement, and how Metro can reverse course.

How LA Metro quietly stopped enforcing fares
For the last five years, LA Metro has inadvertently become America’s largest free transit experiment.

There's a JR East merch and Eastern Japan Travel Information distribution popup this weekend at the Tokyo Central near the Torrance Airport (transit accessible via haha lol, the 232 I guess). Featuring Shinkansen livery chopsticks. I didn't even know there was a Tokyo Central there tbh

A joint meeting for two projects along Garvey Ave in Monterey Park: one (city, funded by the 710 stub reallocation) to implement curb extensions and another (SGVCOG "SGV Forward") to improve transit service. This is the 2nd round of meeting for the MPK one and the first here for the SGVCOG one.

Starting to appreciate that most of our streets in Alameda are highest at the intersection(unusual!) so there is often no grade change required for corner curb ramps.

Took my first scooter ride in a while today (been doing Metro bike) and it’s so depressing what a missed opportunity that was for cities. We did to scooters everything we should have done to cars:
- capped speeds with governors
- refused to give curb space
- made heavy pedestrian areas no go zones
