Art director for Rain Games, makers of the (Annie Award nominated!) Teslagrad franchise, World To The West, Mesmer and Girl Genius:AICH. Personal account, posts may contain dad jokes.
Outside of just the normal pipeline of extreme discount sales, i'm curious what indie games could do to replicate the 'not a big hit on inital release/did gangbusters on vhs/dvd dynamic that were the bread and butter of many small movie production companies back in the day.

The big thing to remember about lasagna is that it's good the same day but fantastic the next day, so always make at least a double portion

This one's a fun read

The OG Starcraft stuff they showed in 1996 always was shockingly unambitious for Blizzard, even back when I first saw those screenshots after the fact in like ~1999 or so, when I started frequenting Blizzard fansites.

As you'd expect, there's a story behind that!

Forgot to post this last week, but been working on minimum polycount cogs/gears that are just low poly cylinders with alpha cutoff to imply shape on the end facing towards walls

Knuckle jet uses a fairly complicated set of 2d-space mechanics presented as user friendly as possible, but i'm kinda obsessed with the idea of what the concessions they would have used to make it work on various generations of older hardware and what lessons could be learned from those

Ha! My friend Pierce found an article in a 1999 American Cinematographer Magazine where they literally discuss the warm glow the film is meant to have.

I wish there were more people really into engine tool design who were also really into ui design and vice versa, because two need to intersect so often and it's rarely easy to get both parties fully engaged in making tools that are both brilliantly optimized and easy to understand

Really good insider article on why starcraft was rebooted from a minor title into a big game based on feeling humiliated by the more impressive (later revealed to be fully faked) RTS demo one booth over at a trade show www.codeofhonor.com/blog/starcra...
StarCraft: Orcs in space go down in flames - Code Of Honor
In my previous article about StarCraft I talked about why we rebooted the project and changed it from a follow-on to Warcraft — derisively called “Orcs in space” in 1996 — into the award-winning game ...

This is fascinating.Wasn't aware that the first Ninja Turtles movie got localized edits changing all references from Japan to Korea. Surprisingly not for the Korean market during the ban on Japanese media, but for Japan(Only just started watching the video so don't know why) youtu.be/ZK3GWXf9XJg?...

Looking forward to the digital foundry video on metroid prime 4 on switch 1/2. Seems like a really well balanced generational transition title, like alien isolation was back in the day

Great thread on this classic waterfall teqchnique (not 'just' a ps1 era retro technique btw, plenty of modern games still do variations on it because it's so effective, often with extra bells and whistles afforded by more graphics overhead)
First off, this is what I started off with, straight from the Noesis exporter into Blender.

"Looks boring!" "What are those weird black and white gradients?" I hear you say. Oh we'll talk about those, don't worry.

Great rundown of all the versions of the psycho soldier theme tune (notable for being the first game with a full sampled ingame vocal track back in 1986)

Wish I'd taken the time to figure out @oskarstalberg.bsky.social's dual grid concept earlier. It simplifies everything so much while also enabling nicer tile shapes.

In short: instead of designing tiles, design the boundary slices between them.

the secret to why i don't know shit is i don't ask questions in person, i just spend the next six months fact checking and cross referencing when i encounter a subject i'm drawn towards/interested in, but know nothing about, and that takes time
The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either
