While I have been somewhat skeptical of Mamdani’s proposal to make the bus free, funding it with paid parking would be good policy and good politics.

My neighbourhood lending economy is extremely strong. I borrowed a springform pan from a neighbour to make an ice cream cake, something I need to do twice a year at most. I don't need my own springform pan!
People in the USA are really fixated on personal ownership of stuff. I’m not particularly anti-materialist but, folks, we can share stuff (cars, bikes, books, tools, buildings) and it makes the world better.

What differentiates a city hall that’s doing bold, innovative city-building from a city hall that’s stuck in a same failed business-as-usual?

It’s a leadership culture of competent, creative risk-taking and energy, OR of risk aversion and excuse.

One of my favourite things to work on with cities.

Thinking a lot about the Four Questions as "rural people with no choice but to drive" try to nudge me off the road while driving the largest car they could find for less than 5 miles
Four questions for people who say their driving is essential:

1. why is it essential to drive THAT car?
2. do you drive it as little as possible?
3. why is it essential to drive it that fast?
4. why do you need priority over people who aren't driving?

Imagine no longer Calgary! 👇

It's the first big snow of winter 2025 which means we're all remembering how this works.

However travel, take your time and arrive safely.

I'm thankful to have transportation options like the CTrain to get to work as we enter day 1 budget week - the public hearing 1/

Moments ago, Premier Danielle Smith's government made a terrifying decision and introduced legislation to suspend the charter-protected rights of transgender young people in Alberta.

Now is the time to act. Visit www.stop-smith.ca to sign our petition denouncing this draconian erosion of freedom.

"Cities aren't noisy, cars are noisy"
When it comes to designing cities for biking and walking, Ghent Belgium may still not be as well known as Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris yet, but it’s one of the most inspiring cities in the world. I was honoured to do some work with them in 2019. Watch @streetfilms.bsky.social’s fantastic video:

We need high-quality public transit — good enough that it’s always the best choice over driving. That means wait times under 10 minutes, enough space for people to sit, extended service hours, and decent, well-designed bus stops, etc

We fundamentally misunderstand these things about streets:

1. Streets are a liability, not an asset.
2. Street design is the primary factor in crash prevention and safety.
3. Streets should prioritize human movement, not automobile movement.

Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.
