The ban*will* silence their voices and that’s the point!
"We got a bunch of middle-aged politicians who have no experience in this choosing to have a say over young people.”

Teen activists say they've used social media to share their stories and politically organise. They fear the ban will silence their voice

Thread time.

These proposed local government reforms are being reported as the end of Regional Councils but actually they're probably the end of a lot of rural and smaller district councils in New Zealand. Not sure what I mean?

Christmas is coming, and the Black Friday sales signal we’re in peak gift-buying season.

When you’re picking out gifts for friends and family this year, there’s a whole slew of tech products that are better to avoid. I put together a guide to help you through it.

That article in the Spinoff praising Thiel for being the world’s most interesting man seems like the high water mark for credulous fandom of billionaires.

Remembering various people telling me that actually citizen Thiel is a serious thinker, it was I who was biased, probably blinded against his wisdom by what could only be my base partisan motivations, and what have you.

I see he has now advised the Vice Potus that the Pope is the antichrist.

No matter what the politicians say, this is discrimination. Look at how the regulation is worded: This is not a ban on its use for a particular indication, it's a ban for a population.

Absolutely agreed. Greens have just committed to "timely, free, non-discriminatory access to all forms of gender-affirming healthcare based on informed consent and self-determination" - it shouldn't be hard for labour to make that commitment.

y'know, if tech companies weren't so fired up to call every single thing "AI" it would be a lot easier to distinguish "ML spam filter that is well-sandboxed and tuned on your emails" from "giant context and IP-eroding foundation model that makes people paranoid and unhappy"
since the "google is now training gemini on your email contents" thing keeps bumping around here: it's _not happening_. I say this not to defend google but because I know a lot of people that have broken their filtering and made their lives much more annoying from sheer misinformation.
The malwarebytes Google opting-your-emails-into-ai-training thing is not true. The post is based on one bad tweet.

I know anti-tech lamenting is a Bluesky core principle, but please use the same judgement you would for any other clickbait.

In various meetings, I have been trying to encourage people to steer away from using the term AI, as a next to meaningless term that obscures more than it illuminates, in favour of naming the specific technologies.

Stop worrying about terraforming Mars and start preventing the venusification of Earth.
Humans will NEVER colonize another planet. Never.

If we can’t even agree to do the minimum to keep Earth habitable, there’s no way in hell we’ll cooperate to make another planet habitable.

That every comment in this article is supportive of trans kids right to access puberty blockers tells you everything you need to know. In the medical community, this isn’t even a debate. No one thinks a ban is right.
