I was telling one of my kids that it was physically impossible for an ad to play between songs on any of the records I own, and they asked "and you only have to pay for it once?" and you could see how strange that seemed. You cannot overstate how many basic rules of media consumption have changed.

Courtesy is a big deal in the USA, especially in service industries like hospitality. Europeans are far less so, especially Brit’s who moan about everything 24/7. If it’s not the weather it’s traffic, their boss, grocery prices or their soccer team.

My insight about Americans abhorring silence comes from living in the US on and off for 30 years. The off part is 10 years working in other countries with Americans- filling the void is always referenced as ‘the American thing’ which I do as well. Don’t take it personal, that’s another US thing 😱
I get what you’re saying, but I think that’s a bit of an overgeneralization. Cultural norms definitely play a role some cultures are more comfortable with silence than others but even in the U.S., real conversations still have natural pauses for thinking and reflection.
