I do not enjoy podcasts, too passive, too slow, but this 79m @poltheoryother one is worthwhile. Adam Tooze is much less politically guarded in the more informal setting of a conversation than in Chartbook or his punditry, his liberalism barely aggravates at all.

Leaving Dublin now.
In the departure terminal in one of the shops, I heard a man verbally and xenophobically abusing airport young worker at the till. I told him to stop, he came at me asking what my problem was, backed down, and left.
If you can and you think it's safe, speak up.
No pasarán.

Also "I muted his name and I don't watch or read any news anymore" is not something to be proud of. You should be ashamed of yourselves to be honest. Some of us have been watching our people get shredded in a genocide for over 2 years and we don't say shit like that. Find yourself some moral courage

Seems unfair to single out this man for taking money, meant to address the housing difficulties caused by his party, and spending it on crack instead, when every single one of the housing policies advanced by the current government have all the hallmarks of having been sucked out of a crackpipe too.

The concerted Irish media/FF/FG push to join the Western military alliance so we can deal with the currently imaginary threat of being targeted as part of the Western military alliance is an assault on democracy by reactionaries. Journalism and so public discourse is broken under capitalism.

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone

- tech is now more expensive
- you cannot trust most media of reality anymore
- programs barely function
- energy prices
- literal psychosis
- your voice can be literally stolen for evil
- more spyware

but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

Gods, @micheal-martin.bsky.social is the most spineless coward in a government *full* of spineless cowards. Only delighted to help evil people profit off genocide.
Including services in the Occupied Territories Bill would “damage the country more than in any way put pressure on Israel”.

Really is a problem that for every Mark Cuban ("omg I can buy sports teams yay") there are, like, 25 billionaires who believe God has chosen them to cleanse the Earth with fire and to seed the future of humanity. It's just too much damn money, brains can't handle it.
Factory farming humans — one more reason there should be no billionaires

Western outrage about the Bondi Beach attack is hard to stomach given that attacks on civilians globally are disprproportionately by Western or Western backed forces and not against Westerners. Have some self respect people, and maybe think about the violence we've normalized.

When you drift through some unheralded point in your 40s, you start accumulating actuarial risks.

The odds of illness, heart attack, or the chances losing of a parent go up.

But there is another risk- particularly acute for men.

There is a risk you will lose your capacity for joy.

money
being born into money
knowing other people with money

A really interesting story on the flurry of research enabled by the human genome project revealing that our genes are the primary factor for much less disease than we thought.
As a grant writer for environmental causes, I’ve seen first-hand how funding for the environment often takes a backseat to medical research and human services. This article helps demonstrate why this is a problem; the environment is a HUGE influence on public health and quality of life.
Scientists Thought Parkinson’s Was in Our Genes. It Might Be in the Water
New ideas about chronic illness could revolutionize treatment, if we take the research seriously.
