Since the very dawn of time an awful lot of stuff has happened.
The concerted Irish media/FF/FG push to join the Western military alliance so we can deal with the currently imaginary threat of being targeted as part of the Western military alliance is an assault on democracy by reactionaries. Journalism and so public discourse is broken under capitalism.

Bovino did a photoshoot for CNN and it's more SS than SA.

While the Irish press throws all their efforts into the fight against the woke mob opposing the effective end of Irish neutrality so we do our part in the Great Game a discreet silence is maintained on Fianna Fáil's hard pivot to the racist right.

The FT is the least bad mass market English language newspaper but there's no getting away from the fact they're unable to grasp the current moment in Western politics or capitalism's role in it. Imagine thinking billionaires funding right wing think tanks is a good thing? www.ft.com/content/ea2a...

On Twitter they've disabled automatic translation for Hebrew (presumably at the request of the Israelis) reminding everyone of this banger.

It had a slow motion train crash feeling for me. I walked out of Saving Private Ryan in 1998 convinced that the cultural taboo on glorifying war was over. Soon "liberal interventionism" had been invented to give the West a reason for making war on the savages again.
9/11 was pushing on an open door.

This is from the other place. We laugh at the Blueshirts but this is not the first time I've read one talking approvingly about foreign intervention to thwart the will of voters here. (Eg: back during the GFC). This is a party that's getting tired of democracy getting in the way of common sense.

Dangerous to exclusively blame Fine Gael, Micheál Martin has seen the Irish strain of white nationalism as giving Fianna Fail political strategic depth against Sinn Féin and has indulged it for that reason. The mainstream Irish establishment is now also openly promoting anti-immigrant politics.

The Collisons are classic tech bros. Smart people but gloriously ignorant and convinced they can work things out from first (libertarian) principles. Here's Patrick asking why France was so innovative in 70/80s. He does not like the answer (state monopolies with a mandate beyond profit making).

UK Labour might not nominally be a far right party but given choice is authoritarian repression of protest or everyone important either getting life sentences for complicity in genocide or banishment from public life authoritarian repression is what they'll do. Elite lives are at stake after all.
October 5, 2025 at 11:17 AM
No one in European mainstream media (or political science?) is inclined to discuss what it might mean for democracy with European Union characteristics that elite opinion is determined to not get in the way of (or supports) Israel's US backed genocide in Gaza despite mass popular opposition.
September 24, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Imagine that the week after the UN belatedly acknowledged that the Israeli war on Gaza has been genocide from the start you're still describing it as an "assault on Hamas militants". Why would you do that?

As @ahjohnson.bsky.social has pointed out elsewhere there needs to be a reckoning in the West with what it means that for decades politicians and pundits have said "Israel has a right to defend itself" knowing that they are condoning the murder of children to further a project of ethnic cleansing.
September 13, 2025 at 3:53 PM
I'd just like to observe that the genocide in Gaza is not the only case where Western journalism decided decades ago that the Western public did not need to know about quite how radical the politics of particular US allies are.

The stories of Western derring-do from the 20 year occupation of Afghanistan for instance mostly go like this:

And the Australians were at pains to point out that their British and American colleagues in the "Special Forces Community" were a good deal more bloodthirsty.

So apparently Ireland has joined the auspiciously named Coalition of the Willing and Micheál Martin plans to send Irish troops to Ukraine without a UN madate. Think this should be slightly bigger news, what with it effectively heralding the end of Irish neutrality and all.

Oh, it's just Micheál Martin explaining that without the Triple Lock he'd send Irish troops to Ukraine without a UN mandate. Make no mistake Martin is the Taoiseach most ideologically committed to Western imperialism that we have ever had, a genuine counterrevolutionary.

Funnily enough it was exactly that experience that persuaded me that I needed to support the Palestinian struggle for liberation. In 1998 I talked to my first Israeli backpacker and it was a genuinely unsettling experience to meet a young person so oblivious to their own militant racism.

Oh it's insane. I've been subscribing to the FT for the last few months because I'm worried that generative AI isn't just going to take down the tech sector when investors realize not only is genAI not going to make them rich but that nothing is, the economic model of the last 25 years is kaput.

Fantastic that the EU's post 2008 grand project of pushing back Russian influence has led to hundreds of thousands of dead, European economic decline, the acceptance of genocide and the EU's most important premiers prostrating themselves in front of the desk of a racist know nothing sex offender.
