Women at NASA, starting with one of my favorite #WomenInSTEM photos
🧵
Valerie Thomas (1943) is an African American badass scientist.
She invented the illusion transmitter in 1980.
She helped develop the digital media formats that image processing systems used in NASA's Landsat program.
Her [very cool!] NASA photo next to a stack of computer tapes, 1979.

I keep noodling on how to pitch low traffic neighborhoods in my town (Olympia, WA), but this video makes the best argument.
Bollards & one-way systems stop through traffic. Play signs tell drivers kids are in the street. Paving, build-outs & planting slow cars. People add benches, hang out, share drinks. The street becomes an extension of home - a social space, not a shortcut. This is what neighbourhoods should feel like

I did not know this. It is pleasing.
In fact, B&N has been expanding rather a bit recently; their sales are up and they've refreshed their stores. And independent books stores have been growing in numbers too! It's been quite a turnaround for brick and mortar bookstores in the last couple of years. I hope it lasts.
I'm more shocked they're still opening new B&Ns.

Oh.
🔥 The White House released an article on Monday citing a DoorDash report as confirmation that "inflation has been tamed."

I asked a DoorDash spokesperson today if the company had concluded from its report that inflation had been tamed. DoorDash spokesperson told me, "We did not write that."

Another great quote "Progressive Delivery: delivering what users need when they need it at the least cost and risk to everyone involved"
i am honestly really excited we got the book out. it's been a labour of love. Take advantage of everything we've learned and built in the cloud to ship the right product at the right time to the right user. redmonk.com/jgovernor/pr...

Reading Baudrillard before 2020: "This guy has some excellent lines and occasionally some insight into modern societies."

Reading Baudrillard after 2020: "This man is a provides the key analytical framework to understand our times, and that's why we're screwed."

Three points I keep repeating
1. Left and liberal voters actually really exist
2. The right and "centre" are trying to rule without liberals - they are way out over their skis
3. Reports of right wing total information control are greatly exaggerated

We find industrial heat pumps can cut heating costs by up to 75% vs h2 & and beat natural gas.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon
