I needed to read this chapter from "The Inequality Machine" today. Because here at UCSB, we're done telling students not to bother trying. And the most important mission of my career, "to actually teach them calculus," begins next Fall. #unicornjob🦄 #figaday 3.191/n #year3

Just beautiful, ingenious work to elegantly separate out key theoretical parameters
To get into this we set up a genetic conflict: making the gene the plasmid didn’t want to express an antibiotic resistance gene that helped the cell. By independently tuning the promoter and ribosomal binding site (RBS) we were able to tune the both scales of selection. 10/

Weird word of the day: "kleptosquamy." The testate amoeba Awerintzewia cyclostoma steals scales from other amoeboid organisms to build its own shell. This one has robbed Quadrulella, Netzelia, various euglyphids, and even an Acanthocystis. Kleptosquamy! #amoebae #ProtistsOnSky #biology #nature

Hi friends! I'm looking for simple bio-calculus maximization/minimization problems to give our students some practice taking 1st and 2nd derivatives. Any great, single-equation examples come to mind? Thanks! #LetsActuallyTeachThemCalculus

Chicagoans never stop. I was just watching a live stream of a press conference held by community members in front of FBI headquarters. In the rain in the dark. Umbrellas at hand they are calling for the release of 6 people taken by ICE, 3 also arrested by CPD. They never stop fighting.

Yes - isometric scaling as a way to understand the benefits and costs of being small versus large. Haldane's Harpers article from 1926 is an amazing example of popular science writing.
