These guys just keep getting weirder 🤯. Mesodinium #karmachamaeleon grown with extra nitrogen making crazy plastid extensions (yellow) into the other hemisphere of its cell. (Cilia in red; nuclei in green.) Expanded & imaged by Jonas Larson & Julian Jacobs. #figaday 4.156/n #year4

One reason I try not to travel too much during a new course is that prepping lectures on airplanes without Internet access to reference materials is always a fun challenge. #figaday 4.145/n #year4

Grateful for #NewCalculus. #figaday 4.144/n #year4

Belatedly, this year's "bias whiteboard". Each year we ask our first year grad students to list biases that shape ecological research, and then they brainstorm ways to combat them. This always leaves me feeling optimistic and grateful for the next science generation. #figaday 4.143/n #year4

When I was teaching the prep course for New Calculus, I finally figured out why the second derivative works the way it does. Hopefully the students had a glimpse of that today too. #figaday 4.142/n #year4 #LetsActuallyTeachThemCalculus

Excited to run down to GFDL on Thursday to try to figure this out. I guess a (slim) silver lining to the end of the shutdown. #figaday 4.141/n #year4

They are the bestest 😻

And yesterday's growth rates as a function of evolutionary time... #figaday 4.140/n #year4

Crazy that we've been watching these guys evolve for almost two years now (and crazier still that I haven't looked at the data in a few months). #figaday 4.139/n #year4

Brainstorming some fun max & min problem suggestions for next week. Thanks for the suggestions! #figaday 4.138/n #year4

So proud of our New Calculus students who're telling me in their weekly reflections that they're fired up about programming in R! One student wrote: "This is the Desmos-Google Sheets speed combo I was waiting for!" 🤩 Next week, we'll use it to test stability of equilibria. #figaday 4.135/n #year4

Happy Birthday to the best mom on the planet. Even though I've been missing her for 22+ years, I can still hear her voice giving me a kick in the butt just when I need it. ❤️

Bio Shop kittens are getting so big! So lovely for all of us to have department cats to cuddle again. 😻 #figaday 4.134/n #year4

Can't resist an opportunity to brag about our lab. 5 years ago, they started an EDI book club, which is now department-wide. Last year, I turned over prompt writing to them, and they write just the most thoughtful and thought-provoking questions. Also I endorse the book. #figaday 4.133/n #year4

Pros: Our 6-weeks-in rotation student is already plotting his own data. Cons: ggplot has infected him too. Guest fig by Jonas Larson. #figaday 4.131/n #year4

I cried writing this lecture, I cried reviewing my notes last night, and I almost cried giving it. I feel immensely honored to be even tangentially associated with a field that made such a transformative difference in our treatment of HIV. #figaday 4.130/n #year4

If your answer to yesterday's question looked something like this, congratulations, you'd have answered one of the questions on our students' midterm correctly! #LetsActuallyTeachThemCalculus #figaday 4.127/n #year4

Imagine you have a bacterial infection, then go to the doctor to receive treatment. If this graph shows the dynamics of the bacterial population, B, what does a graph of the *change* in bacterial abundance (B') look like? #LetsActuallyTeachThemCalculus #figaday 4.126/n #year4
