really tired of seeing claims that our illegal kidnapping of the Venezuelan president is to "distract" us from the Epstein files. Trump and the men around him have wanted this for a long time. this is a bad thing in its own right, not some attempt to hide from accountability

This widely shared post, which claims to show Venezuelans celebrating the fall of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, is false.

The video was actually filmed in Miami, Florida, and not in Venezuela.

This video, viewed millions of times on TikTok, Facebook and X, claims to show Venezuelans taking to the street to thank the US for detaining Maduro.

But the video is a combination of four AI-generated clips and was first posted on TikTok by a user who frequently shares AI videos. It's not real.

THREAD: Viral misinformation on US capture of Nicolas Maduro - 4 January

This video, shared by Alex Jones and others, falsely claims to show millions of Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro's capture.

In fact, it shows anti-Maduro protests in July 2024 over a highly disputed election.

Translate "Hail Victory" into German. Go on, Google translate is right there waiting.
If the Republican Party was an institution suited to hold power in a religiously and culturally pluralistic democracy, it would not allow (let alone encourage) its rising youth to gleefully Hitler post.

FWIW, they have now deleted that post with no apology or explanation.

It is, it just needs a different processing than US oil, but it's absolutely worth it for those who depend on it. Heavier oil is not worthless oil.
The amount of “this is clearly about oil” posting across all platforms as story after story comes out where the oil industry is saying that the oil isn’t worth extracting is making me feel a little insane

I want to remind everyone that the US has sanctioned members of the International Criminal Court for going through a formal legal process to identify international leaders who engaged in war crimes, making them vulnerable to arrest.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Why wasn't congressional authorization necessary?

RUBIO: It wasn't necessary because this was not an invasion. We didn't occupy a country. This was an arrest operation.

WELKER: Mr. Secretary, are you running Venezuela right now?

MARCO RUBIO: Yeah. People are fixating on that. Here's the bottom line -- we expect to see changes in Venezuela

People being like, "But Venezuelans are happy about Maduro being gone!" have the memories of goldfish. IN 2003, the narrative was that Iraqis celebrated the U.S. invasion and capture of Saddam.

Whether they were happy or not, invading Iraq was still the wrong thing to do.

And European leaders will respond with unparalleled levels of "monitoring the situation".

Amerikāņu imperiālisms go brr, visi libi Latvijā steidzas apstiprināt, ka šo zābaku zoles ir visgaršīgākās, vienlaikus cerot, ka nākamais, ko nolaupīs, būs Putins, un sapņojot, ka mums jau viss būs ok, jo mēs esam draugi.
Stulbeņi valdībā, stulbeņi partijās, stulbeņi medijos, stulbeņi visur.
