Range breaking news from the great technical analyst @hmeisler.bsky.social

No, not like that 📈 like this 🧑‍🍳
If I knew how to search on BS I would but I don't so here's my oven/range update
1. The control panel of my range broke July 4th weekend.
2. Took a week to get the repair guy out. He said sorry they don't make the replacement part anymore (range is only 10 yrs old so wtf?)

This is a very special piece of writing
He modeled the logic of induction; traced the contours of the embodied mind; hung out with Einstein, Wheeler, and Bohr; gave away millions for art and conservation; fought for civil and gay rights; and lived as a janitor. My new story in @nautil.us

Not sure how many people know that X now doesn't show the reply threads or profile pages to non-users.

Combined with the practice providing the links later in the reply threads (please don't do this here it's useless), most academic paper threads on X is useless for non-X users.

I laughed out loud in public thank you @cristiproist.bsky.social
People always ask me : “Cristi, how do you manage parenting a baby while going up for tenure?”

It’s easy. The secret is *flow-based-scheduling*. Here are its three core strategies for new academic parents:

Sleep when the baby sleeps
Cry when the baby cries
Publish when the baby publishes

One of the curiosities of my working life (magpie, stealing shiny things) has been the fact that astro people have consistently written the best resources in numerical methods.
An absolutely fantastic textbook on statistics and machine learning by Prof. Yuan-Sen Ting came out this week - and it's free! #astromethods ☄️

I had a read and it's incredibly comprehensive and well-written - I expect this to become *the* foundation book on stats & ML basics in astro.
Statistical Machine Learning for Astronomy -- A Textbook
This textbook provides a systematic treatment of statistical machine learning for astronomical research through the lens of Bayesian inference, developing a unified framework that reveals connections ...

Before the charm quark was discovered in bound states, it was predicted via indirect effects. An early success story of the electroweak model and QFT!

Mary Gaillard and John Rosner, who both passed last week, contributed to calculating the charm quark mass
