Not if, say, the President declares martial law, sends the National Guard to "guard" the Capitol and only admit those who are on the "right" list.

Do I think this is likely? Not really. But any argument based on "this is how tradition or the Constitution works" doesn't really apply to Trump.

The main bank account holding revenue from the Venezuelan oil sales is located in Qatar.

“There is no basis in law for a president to set up an offshore account that he controls so that he can sell assets seized by the American military,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The “Trump two-step” is basically a volatility tax: float a norm-breaking threat, then maybe retreat. Even if he backs down, the fact it happened raises the perceived risk of future interference.

Excellent analysis by Jason Furman on the prospects of continued Fed independence. I'm optimistic regarding the next 3 years. After that? Who knows?
But I'm still worried about the longer term. Complacency (because the Fed seems safe) and time may not be on the Fed's side as people lower their guard (because it all seems fine) and Trump and possibly his successors make more appointments.

This is roughly consistent with the view that we're in a 2.5% inflation world. Maybe you think that is an OK place to be stuck at. Maybe you think it's too high and we should get to 2.0%.

But labor market data suggest some downward pressure so maybe headed towards 2%.

Core inflation ended the year at 2.7% (on a Q4/Q4 basis).

That is a bit higher than was expected pre-Trump but much lower than the was feared post liberation day--based on Survey of Professional Forecasters forecasts.

Being Jay Powell cannot be the only protection a member of the Fed can rely on. We are still in a very precarious position regarding political threats to the Fed. The Supreme Court must bolster the removal protections.
