FACT OF THE DAY. 27 November 1975. Ross McWhirter (aged 50), co-founder of the Guinness Book of Records and outspoken critic of the IRA, was shot dead outside his home in London by 2 members of the paramilitary group.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 26 November 1939. Tina Turner (Anna Mae Bullock) was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, USA. Known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” she won 12 Grammy Awards and sold 100 million records. In 2008 Rolling Stone ranked her No 17 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Private Reginald Tite, Royal Sussex Regiment, was executed by firing squad for cowardice on this day in 1916. Ninety years later he was one of 306 soldiers who were granted a posthumous pardon.

Able Seaman Henry Cullimore, of Cromhall, Gloucestershire, drowned in Budapest while serving on H.M. Motor Launch 434. He is one of only four Great War servicemen buried in Hungary. His remains were moved to their current location in 1958.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 24 November 1991. Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara) died of AIDS complications (aged 45). He was the lead singer-songwriter with Queen and known for his flamboyant stage persona and 4-octave vocal range. Undoubtedly one of rock’s greatest live performers.

FACT OF THE DAY. 24 November 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald, charged with the murder of President John F Kennedy, was shot and killed by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby live on national TV in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters. Speculation now arose as to whether Oswald was being silenced.

Cpl Joshua Wilson rests in a cemetery where I volunteer for the CWGC. He was the son of William and Mary Wilson and was the husband of Beatrice, of 25 Fitton St, Nuneaton. Apart from his medal index card, I can’t find much else about him.
