I talk a lot about MCAS and TTRPGs.
Canadian-Australian living in Alberta.
Probably won't follow you if you're American. I get enough of that on every other social platform.
Occasional Christian-posting. Occasional Ace-posting.

Just putting this out there, I want to teach people how to sew (via video call) this year, if you want sewing support let's chat!

I have a degree in Apparel Technology, and I need a way to support myself that doesn't exacerbate my MCAS, online sewing coaching is something I'd LOVE to do.
Just thinking about how Evangelicals tell their teens that all those people having sex are ACTUALLY miserable deep down and having sex God's Way (TM) is what makes you truly happy and uhhh

I don't wanna hold onto a theology that relies on gaslighting other people out of their experience.

😬😬😬

(Also zero surprise about this, any time you have new big industry you don't have enough safety regulation and when you don't have enough safety regulation, people get hurt. Safety regulation is written in the blood of those closest to new industry.)

Everytime I advertise a product being accessible to disabled people. I lose sales because able-bodied people feel like it isn't for them as well.

My products are for anyone that likes or wants them. You don't need to view yourself as disabled to want them too.

I am very sorry to all the guys who would like to be one of The Five Guys Who Have All The Money but we will never have a working economy with Five Guys Having All The Money

The economy is supposed to be an ecosystem not a kingmaker

My seven-year-old phone is so much less shitty than modern phones, software-wise.
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago

Can I tell you the thing that worked for me to say? "Thanks, I'm so glad you like it!" Because I am glad! I am glad people like it, whatever it is! And it stops me from continuing after "thank you" with any kind of nonsense about whichever way I'm feeling about the thing at the moment
Artists… learn how to say thank you to a compliment, or, I would love feedback if you have any! Rather than, oh I’m awful, my art sucks.
It’s… actually not modest, it puts everyone in a weird spot when you degrade yourself, and I REALLY GET THaTS HARD!

free advice: don't get mad at a sick person w/ an unreliable body for not being able to do something

the sick person is probs already pretty mad at themselves (really at their body, but internalized ableism is a helluva drug) and managing a mountain of grief from all the other things they can't do

Had a family member tell me that my chronic illness (MCAS) hasn't been diagnosed by a doctor and so I shouldn't let it get in the way of Christmas plans because they have a doctor-diagnosed chronic illness and THEY don't let it interfere with their activities and plans.

All these influencers out here like "your body is so wise", "your body is designed to heal itself", "just trust your body and everything will get better". . . and like my body is doing the best she can with what she has but she is NOT all-wise and perfect.

Didn't read the label closely enough and got tinned pears with sucralose instead of sugar. BLECH. They're too freaking sweet.

It's important to write hand-written letters to your friends when you need to send them something. Ideally while doing a bit. Maybe you're a union soldier, separated from your ladylove. Maybe a hot air balloon operator.

We mustn't let the realities of today restrain the nonsense within us.

King Charles gave me, specifically, a birthday gift. 😂
Yaaaay Bill C-3 got royal assent ON MY BIRTHDAY!! Super nerdy politics thing, but it's a bill that means I can pass on my Canadian citizenship to my kids if they're born outside of Canada, and has direct impact on my life because it would determine if I should have kids in Canada, or go elsewhere.

Extremely wild and weird for what seems like a stodgy obscure bill to affect me so tangibly, I've been watching this closely, but that's politics baybee!

Scientists if you’re like “man I wish more people knew about X” then I humbly suggest hiring an artist to make a thing that communicates X and then put it into the world because it’s so fun, extremely “hell yeah” inducing, you gotta try it.

I burnt out in college. Hard enough that I ended up with a chronic illness, and didn't want to touch a sewing machine for years, and needed EMDR therapy to feel comfortable sewing again.

The story I told myself is that I was a perfectionist and that's why I burned out.

No.
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

I did get it.

I bought a laptop and went to Quebec to do an acting internship.

(CERB counts as a sort of Universal Basic Income and if I wasn't already convert before the pandemic, I'm a ride-or-die for UBI now.)
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

normalise serving chocolate milk at parties
I do not drink because I have almost no tolerance for it anymore (one margarita is too much).

If you are hosting a party, I recommend also stocking:
-fancy ginger beer
-coconut water
-premium juices like lychee and guava
-apple cider with cinnamon
-Italian sodas
-sparkling water

Lots of options!

I should continue trying to get into Schitt's Creek. I'm like, 8-10 episodes in to the first season (it has taken me about four years to get this far) and it hasn't clicked yet but nearly everyone says it takes a while to find its feet.
Dan Levy openly says that Schitt's Creek would not have survived anywhere except the CBC because it was weird and took a season or so to find its feet... Just for reference if you wanna know the ROI on this approach to supporting creative things.
Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

WAIT ANGELA ANACONDA IS CANADIAN??

I watched that as a kid in Australia.

Also it's why I even know what side starboard and port are.
The best of Canadian tv is somewhere between Cyber Six, Angela anaconda, the log drivers waltz and Yvon of the yukon...

And you can request books from libraries and they might get them. Or get interlibrary loans. If you are like me and have massive amounts of executive dysfunction, there's now e-books and audiobooks. And using your library means that it is more likely to be funded.
