For the #yyc area in particular, I will be in yyc next Wed am participating in a discussion on #criticalminerals to kick off Calgary Climate Week. I expect to be around all day if people want to connect and talk critical minerals, processing, etc.

🚀 Huge step forward for decarbonising heat: Construction has started on world’s largest seasonal thermal energy storage facility in Vantaa, Finland.

Massive underground caverns will store 1.1m m³ of hot water — around 90 GWh of heat, enough to warm an entire town through winter.

@usoceanprotection.bsky.social today released a report I co-authored on deep-sea mining for #criticalminerals. It’s an interesting study, dives into extraction and processing as well as markets. I do not opine on environment, not my area.

#yeg #yegcc @edmontonanne.bsky.social YEG has killed 30 people this year. What is council going to mandate administration to actually DO? A new study isn’t going to save lives in the next few years, and hope isn’t a strategy. #yegbike @michaeljanz.bsky.social @ashleysalvador.bsky.social
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

Here is #yeg traffic fatalities per a CityNews article from last week adjusted up one for Friday’s incident. Based on my OHS training, I hesitate to call it an accident as it was fully preventable. The rate of increase is higher than the rate of decline was. Up 150% in 3 years!!

#yeg Pretty sad that in #cbc and other media, it seems the “good behaviour” bar for killing a person with a vehicle is not fleeing the scene. I’m sure the driver didn’t intend to do it, and will suffer with the consequences, but language of “being struck by a car” not by an inattentive driver sucks.

#yegbike It appears the 113 st MUP from 111 Ave to Kingsway is now "open". The two remaining open stretches have been gravelled (slightly concave) and barriers removed. You no longer have to divert onto the street. But north end still dumps you straight into Kingsway, so be careful!
November 15, 2025 at 4:58 PM
Looks like the new MUP plus on-road bike route on 111 ave from 120 st to 106 st is open (although a bit of construction ongoing in 113-114 st area). But still two big gaps in the 113 st MUP north of 111 ave that force you into the road. #Yegbike

Everyone - hunters, hikers, and cows - has a role to play in keeping our rural lands safe from gun violence.
"Everyone - whether driving, walking or cycling has a role to play in keeping our community safe."
-Mayor Andrea Horwath

My question is simple: What about those who design, approve, build and maintain hostile road design? Do they have a role?
A crossing guard was killed by the driver of a dump truck yesterday. absolutely heartbreaking.
Look at our intersections, look how hostile these are for people/children - this is what we continue to build and defend at all costs. These aren't accidents, these are results. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

To other Canadian city mayors (@andrewknack.bsky.social since you're my mayor), do NOT give tone deaf statements like this putting the crux of community safety on pedestrians and cyclists after a tragic death by a driver! This is embarrassing coming from my old hometown. #hamont #visionzero

Look for new leader: 64%
Keep Poilievre: 36%

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

People quit bad bosses more than bad companies (but both matter). With Carney and the Conservative Party both polling about 50% higher than Poilievre and people jumping ship, you have to wonder how long he can survive. I would love to see a Conservative Party that I would consider voting for.

#yegbike my favourite biking memory for 2025 is cycling through the battlefields of northern France. Very impactful seeing the area, the cemeteries, the monuments at human speed. Highly recommended. The quantity of memorialized soldiers for whom remains have not been found is terrifying.

#yegbike to O'day'min Park today. What a beautiful asset for #yeg and our downtown in particular. The push-button gas fires will be welcome all winter, the playground and seat swings are great. But my picture is of the simple fix I want for summer streets 2026. Screw the dinky double-90 ramps.

Felt great to suck it up and ride out in the #yeg snow again. As usual, more overheat than cold issues. Next time a rag for the glasses would be good to remember! #yegbike

Well analyzed. Always take the Fraser Institute with a hefty kilo of salt.
The Fraser Institute published a study on the fiscal cost of Canada’s low-carbon economy -- one that (shocker!) found lots of money spent on relatively few jobs.

I fact checked it for them. It didn't go well.

Maybe they didn't expect anyone to fact check their work. I did it anyways.

Went to renew my passport in #yeg Canada Place today. Gotta say, the process is much more pleasant than it was a decade ago! Pleasant staff, not pulling a number that is dozens away, etc. But rolling out online further (need to be within 6 months of expiry) would be great!
