You know what we won't need once handwriting recognition software has done its thing? Archivists, curators, conservators, catalogers, codicologists, or paleographers. We won't need archives either. We won't need diplomatics, editorial theory, book or media history, or material culture studies 🗃️🧵

Making our traditional Thanksgiving meal: spiced cranberry compote, turkey for spouse & Bearkitten, roasted brussels sprouts, the green bean casserole, & my grandpa's mashed potatoes which involve a whole container of French onion dip whipped in. Toasted pecan pie & port for dessert. And y'all 🙂?

I've made the cranberry compote & am now working on the pecan pie. I have a recipe I love (from Sheila Lukins's USA Cookbook), but I toast the pecans first. Just burned the first batch, so it's a good thing I bought extra! Also, the pie has bourbon in it instead of vanilla extract.

No. It's donors. It's still obscene but it's not state money. What it does do, though, is reflect a higher ed environment in which university admins will ask donors for $54 million to pay off a coach but they'll never ask those same donors to fund the English or history or sociology departments
Are the people of Louisiana - one of the poorest and worst performing states in the nation on every metric - going to be paying him $54 million?
5:45 pm on Thanksgiving Eve?

Now THIS is how you news dump.

You can tell it's an AI recipe if the personal backstory is really insipid
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

We rented a decrepit Edwardian house from spouse's employer the first year we lived in KY. Drove by today for the first time in forever; it's now a luxury Airbnb with a pickleball court. Spent a while gawking at the interior pics and remembering when we'd hear squirrels in the walls & other horrors.

Most of the time when I see a drab-backed bird from a distance hopping around in our yard, it's something like a robin. Today, however, it was a female flicker! And then another female flicker showed up & they chased each other round a tree! Teeny moment of happiness on a gray November day.

I chanced upon r/cheese and have learned that fancy cheese in a can is a Whole Thing? Cougar Gold cheese from Washington State University? I'm sort of intrigued.

Thinking a lot about how poorly our brains recognize long term subtle changes, like climate change or biodiversity loss. We've lost something like 1 out of every 4 individual birds in the US since 1970, more for some species.

There should be at least 25% more birds around you right now.

Opposite of my Mom in so many ways (e.g., uh, geopolitical worldview) but alike in some other weird ones. We both brush our teeth in one bathroom but do hair/any makeup in a different one in the house. What is time, even?

Got stranded at the Atlanta airport last night & was lucky enough to secure a hotel. Tried to explain to the cab driver who took me to the hotel what the Democrats were fighting for/holding out for (ACA subsidies). I wonder if he is thinking tonight that what he was hearing from me was crazy talk.

Lots of sea turtles along the coast in the St Pete / Clearwater area this month in addition to all the rays. There are sea turtles along the coast here all year, but I've been seeing a lot more than usual lately. Most are 100-400 feet from shore. #nature #animals #awesome #ocean #turtle #wildlife

We're going to a bat walk next week! 🦇 This is exciting! I can't be trusted to make ticket arrangements when I'm tired, though - because I thought I saw this was happening tomorrow night, and it was only when I got the email that I realized my mistake.

I see that my heretofore foolproof rule of not partaking in postseason baseball - unless the team I'm rooting for is up by at least 3 runs - has failed me. Mariners fans, that home run was my fault because now my not listening produces the opposite effect.
