Hello, new friends! I'm a teacher of gothic lit, 18th/19th-c Brit lit, health humanities, and generally weird, upsetting, important stuff. Working on the gothic & dementia at the moment. The actor Michael Sheen used all his money to start a fake debt collecting business, buy 900 people in Wales's debt, and excused it. If Musk bought ALL $194 billion in medical debt in the U.S. and excused it in the same way, he'd still be the world's riches man by hundreds of billions of dollars.

The real task for me as a teacher (and human being) is to make sure that I keep my eyes on the real villain in the whole AI debacle--capital and its captains.

It is not my students.

And I won't let this mess turn me into a cop.

A new list of faculty workshops encouraging AI usage in the classroom. A new massive data center approved close-ish to where I grew up. It's all just so disheartening.

Really thinking someone would make a fortune if they made creative / other daily flow tools that worked with no AI. Someone please do that.

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

NEW: Five years of social media history is only a fraction of what the US Government will shortly demand of overseas visitors.

The full requirements will end tourism in the United States.

Below is the full, mind-blowing list.

If you have an iphone, do not do the update! I mistook it for a routine security update and have spent too much of today trying to undo as much as possible. It appears to be increasingly designed by airhead preteens. How do I sign up for the adult version?

I can't stop thinking about the purported drug smugglers being murdered by the US military. The punishment for drug offenses isn't the death penalty. This is just bloodlust and men in suits playing with lives they don't care about. It's truly grotesque and gravely compromises this country.

I've finally seen Frankenstein and loved it as much as I hoped I would. I've heard Guillermo del Toro wax lyrical about the novel and believe he treats it and all its network of texts as sacred texts. And his movies are true tactile works of art.

Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?
