Universities are in crisis, and I don’t think it’s helpful to phrase that as “exiting the market”. They’re not mid-range shoe shops, these are educational pillars in society
Chief exec of OfS 'said the OfS believes there are 24 institutions at risk of exiting the market in the next 12 months, seven of which are large providers with more than 3,000 students. There are another 25 or so institutions of various sizes at risk over a two- to three-year period, she added.'
Seven ‘large providers’ at risk of going under in the next year
Skills minister says no higher education institutions are at imminent risk of collapse this year but OfS confirms more than 20 providers are being closely monitored

Tiny moment of zen for the timeline. All things flow. This too shall pass.

No, I'm not having serious doubts about my future career plans, why do you ask?

Good morning, while everyone is waiting for the budget to be announced it’s a good time to say that immigration is a source of prosperity for the UK and painting Britain as a hostile state is sabotaging the country. Thanks!

If anyone has successfully explained to a STEM boss that, no actually humanities scholars don't need a team of postdocs to collect all the data for them & write their papers & it's completely normal to just... do all your work mostly by yourself with some peer insight & feedback, lmk what you said.

Dave watched this government Education Committee meeting so you didn’t have to. But you do have to read his summary (if you have any interest in the future of HE)
"A system built on specialisation, efficiency", that right there is the death knell for the current university system in the UK, if (big if) government pushes it through. They actively don't want HE to grow, they will intervene, apparently, to help it shrink.

per this morning's education committee.

The @royalhistsoc.org is running a charitable donation campaign to fund the research of historians who lack support. The number of applications we're seeing is way up. I've been very lucky to have a career as a historian, I've donated, and I think this Christmas you should too. Pay it forward.

Met up with a former student who did a great undergrad research project with me. She’s applying for a PhD now. She’s done some really cool work for her master’s on photography at Pompeii. It was so wonderful to see how successful she’s been doing really cool work!! #TinyJoys

Cycling to the local community garden to collect some apple juice... and spotted a random chunk of Hadrian's Wall outside Kwik Fit. Unexpected encounters with bits of Roman archaeology in everyday locations is one of my favourite #TinyJoys of living in this area.

Another thing that nobody ever tells you will be required of you as a parent: rescuing an ambitious school project from the overenthusiastic application of glitter glue.

Suddenly forcibly reminded of the fact that they made me assembly music monitor in primary school. In charge of the tape recorder and the music for coming in and going out. I am not sure they continued to think that a good idea.

After a really rough Monday morning (never fun to start with a doctor's appointment!), I was so glad to come back to leftover chocolate tart. ❤️

(PS: Everything's fine overall; nothing dangerous got diagnosed. But I still needed that chocolate comfort afterwards!)

Great to read this table, the week after my institution announces a voluntary severance programme, to see the government introducing a policy that will cost us an extra *£13 million*
These are HEPI estimates of the 20 institutions affected: I think this illustrates the impact if the tariff is absorbed in full by institutions.

What share of the 6% tariff different universities may try to pass on to fees - or the impact might be on demand if they did - is not publicly known.

We pour billions into saving an economically tiny steel industry whilst actively destroying one of our largest export industries. (Yes, higher education to overseas students who already massively subsidise UK students, are counted as exports).

For the USHE crowd, fathom this: the systemic pattern in UKHE the past few years has been to CUT the best, most award-winning, most-grant-getting, most-publishing programs.
The cuts at Leicester University are also targeting some of our top REF (and NSS) performers: History; Film Studies; Chemistry; Modern Languages; Geography, Geology & Environment
