Made a New Year’s resolution to actually leave Storygraph reviews on books I read, which I always forget to do. However, the reviews are allowed be very stupid jokes

As a social movements scholar, I absolutely love the diversity of tactics being developed by each city, reflecting their local flavor

Portland kept it weird with inflatable costumes

Chicago protected its street vendors by buying up their food each day

Charlotte chased ICE agents into the woods

My genres are delightfully varied so far this year

Now to read through my TBR, which is 5000 queer fantasy books

Instead of ending the constitution and murdering people, we could have high speed trains and universal health care.

Really loved this, from @taliabhatt.itch.io, on strains of anti-radical and accommodationist feminisms, and their fundamental hostility to lesbian perspective and ultimately to lesbian existence. taliabhattwrites.substack.com/p/political-...

Note: reader demand for queer books is only going up

But publishing (depending on the publisher) is less about what they can sell to readers and more about what they think bookstores, libraries, schools, etc will buy. And book bans affect what a bunch of these can buy.

But as ever:

If you trust a big tech company to do right by citizens in this political climate then I have two Brooklyn bridges to sell you for the price of one.
big tech companies are taking note of the backlash to data centers — and they, w/ the help of the Trump administration, are promising to be good neighbors

first up is Microsoft, which announced a series of commitments this morning - some of Microsoft’s projects have faced serious pushback
Microsoft Has a Plan to Keep Its Data Centers From Raising Your Electric Bill
In response to a growing backlash, Microsoft said it would take steps to ensure that data centers don’t raise utility bills in surrounding areas and address other public concerns.

I’m watching D.E.B.S. for the first time as part of my journey through the lesbian classics™️ and was reading the reviews (as one does) and came across this one and I’m just dying.

Like bro you’re so close, just think a little bit harder… 😭

The power of queer romance to break the brains of supposedly smart critics remains hilarious
SURE, yes, those are the correct literary antecedents.

Naomi Watts has been insane, but there is something really fucking funny about saying that last part about a queer woman who was protesting with her butch wife
That actually kind of sounds like your fantasy, Naomi.

My friends and I are having a secret santa PowerPoint party tonight (as in, you draw a name and make a secret slide deck for that person to present), and I’m making a straight white man with a PhD in math who doesn’t read fiction talk about SJM and queer theory and it’s going to be hilarious
