Hawk normally dwarfed Numair, but he seemed even more massive and looming now, despite being bent nearly double. His arms hung, the unchanged one trembling as blood ran down it from the cut on his shoulder. The sky had gone nearly black, and against it the impressions of many heads looked more solid, all glaring sightlessly down at Numair. His face was contorted with a terrible fury, such that Numair actually took a step back through the thick, electric yellow grass.

He said, through clenched teeth, "Say something."

Numair seemed to find his voice all of the sudden, and what came out was, "...All right, it's true. I am the Cynn of Aetheri."

Lightning struck so close and so loudly behind him then that he felt all of his hair stand on end, but he could still hear Hawk over the noise:

"I can't FUCKING believe this."

Hawk turned, and so did all the heads, snapping silently about his face. He was silent for an awful moment, and then muttered, "I'm so goddamn stupid."

He pushed forward through the tall grass past Numair, who cried after him, "Eh?! No--Hawk...!"

Hawk ignored him. He had a strange ghostly tail now as well, which left a trail through the grass. Numair made to follow, though the thick grass was nearly up to his chest now.

"Hawk, please," he called desperately. "I am sorry. I-I didn't think you would be so angry."

Hawk jerked to a halt, every feather standing on end. He turned back towards Numair, no less furious. "What...?"

"I did not realize how much the spell meant to your family," Yoshi said.

"Oh, it doesn't," Teige replied offhandedly, picking up a bit of string that had been lying on the table. "The spell is dead simple, you've seen. It's the family tradition that's so damn important."

"Er, that's what I meant," Yoshi said uncertainly, watching as Teige looped the string around his fingers and passed it between them back and forth, forming different patterns as he went. "Your grandmother wouldn't be upset that you're teaching a total outsider this?"

"My grandmother doesn't speak to me anymore." Teige's tone was matter-of-fact, though he was looking at the string around his fingers rather than at Yoshi. "Me, or my mum. She disagreed enough with Ma divorcing my dad, but my being transgender was the last straw, as t'were. She expected Ma to disown me, but Ma didn't. So out we went."

Yoshi frowned a little. "...Disown...for being transgender?" she said, as though she didn't see the connection between the two. Teige had taken one loop of the string in his teeth and pulled it up gently, forming a sort of narrow triangle with a twist in the middle.

"Happens often enough," he said, keeping the string in his teeth. "Earth's a deadly place to be trans."

Yoshi looked around at her. "It's not?"

"Did I not say?" Shinobu crouched down to lower the stack of books into an open chest that sat near the kitchen entry. That done, she straightened up, and made a little somewhat-celebratory gesture. "I'm going on sabbatical! After 67 years, the University is letting me put aside my bestiary project for a while."

"Oh!" Yoshi looked shocked. "Erm...congratulations! B-but I thought the bestiary was your life's work?? And you haven't even interviewed Hawk yet!"

"Oh, Vlad tells me that Hawk isn't ready to talk about 'all that stuff' yet," Shinobu said dismissively, managing to make air quotes with her paws. "And if he really is half reifa, it isn't as though he'll die before I can interview him, eh?"

She stepped past a folding screen that separated off part of the room, which seemed to comprise of a slightly lower area full of oversized and haphazardly scattered cushions and blankets, and a back wall which was full of packed bookshelves. For a moment she stood among the cushions and surveyed the bookshelf, her back to Yoshi.

"It's just as well," she reflected after a while. "I've been feeling a bit restless. Working on the same thing for 67 years without rest...even sheer passion cannot fuel one forever, I think. Perhaps some time away will stoke the flame before it goes out."

She began plucking books down from the shelves. Yoshi had followed to the edge of the cushion-filled area and now stood, pulling at her shirt collar a bit.

"Ah, I'm sure it will," she agreed. "So! Er...you're going on vacation, then?"

Shinobu turned around with another stack of books and a grin. "Oh, no," she said brightly. "I'm beginning an entirely new project!"

"Ah."

The crowd under the lanterns was boisterous and happy; people humanoid and otherwise clustered around little tables, eating and drinking, while servers with trays wound between them. Hawk and Teige sat at one table, eating something like large hand-held dumplings and a basket of julienned fries, and drinking deeply from large mugs.

"A sleepover, eh?" Teige inquired. "Just the two of them?"

"Sure, why not?" Hawk said, with his mouth full.

"Sure, why not," Teige echoed. "Maybe I expected you to be a bit over-protective."

"Nah, I trust Liya," Hawk replied, and took another bite of whatever was in the basket. "An' Yoshi seems like a good kid."

Teige pointed at him. "She is a good kid. I'd vouch for her on the stand."

"Right, so if they want to spend the night together, that's fine," Hawk said, and shrugged. He paused a moment as Teige took a generous bite out of his dumpling, and then said, a little more doubtfully, "...Right?"

"Sure, sure. What's to worry about, I suppose." Teige placed his half-eaten dumpling down on the plate and took up his mug. He added ruefully, "Aah, you know what it is? It's the way I was raised. There ent any trust there."
