Thinking a lot lately about the simple fact that college allows people to spend about 15 weeks immersed in a disciplinary conversation with an expert in that field. And what a special thing that is.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

What if, hear me out, we didn’t need insurance companies because we just had a nationalized health care system that didn’t waste enormous sums of money on insurance companies.
Cassidy: "The president is proposing that we take the $26b that would be going to insurance companies if we just do an extension and give it directly to the American people in which 100% of the money is used for them to purchase healthcare on their own terms. That makes them an informed consumer."

From this minister's op-ed: "People wanting to experience God are more likely to meet the Divine trying to shut down the Broadview, Illinois, ICE facility than we ever were in church...God does not live in our houses of worship, but...with those who are bearing the brunt of cruelty in this moment."

For Natives in more rural areas, there are food distribution centers for commodities which low-income Natives rely on because they are situated in food deserts. These centers will also NOT be distributing food, so this isn't just a scatter of individuals in need but entire communities.

Entire homily—and Mass, tbh—was about food insecurity and SNAP ending and ongoing work to mitigate the wave that’s coming. Not unusual for the Franciscans but it’s always good for people who aren’t SNAP beneficiaries to hear numbers and think about the choices facing many in our parish & community.
