Got this fantastically clever Christmas gift. It's a dedicated algorithm free music player that you can carry around without the distractions of your phone, and it can hold thousands of songs without needing an internet connection. The UI is so simple anyone can manage it. Fantastic

Most of my window is covered in a thin sheet of wavey ice. Looks like an expensive effect to recreate without nature. A small gap in the window ice got me a shot of wisteria, a long winding vine plant that covers my yard bench, complete covered in a thin layer of ice. Each long vine of wisteria is encased in ice.

A male bluebird sits in the center of frame upon a crooked diagonal branch of an old crabapple tree (you can see a few still-red crabapples dangling in the background, like weird little Christmas ornaments). The bluebird is sitting forward, facing right, with its orange breast all puffed out, and its impossibly blue head and back bold against the mushy brown-gray late winter background. The bluebird is a creature of happiness and hope, brought back from the brink of extinction and so we take lessons from the bluebird -- and from our efforts to save it -- on this day. But it's also worth noting that right now THIS bluebird is watching another pair of bluebirds try to lay claim to a nesting box, and the thoughts going through his head are probably "oh fuck you, that's mine," as they keep fighting over that space, like cranky renters. What is the most spook-tacular nebula in the galaxy? One contender is LDN 43, which bears an astonishing resemblance to a vast cosmic bat flying amongst the stars on a dark Halloween night. Located about 1400 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus, this molecular cloud is dense enough to block light not only from background stars, but from wisps of gas lit up by the nearby reflection nebula LBN 7. Far from being a harbinger of death, this 12-light year-long filament of gas and dust is actually a stellar nursery. Glowing with eerie light, the bat is lit up from inside by dense gaseous knots that have just formed young stars. Your Sky Surprise: What picture did APOD feature on your birthday? (post 1995)
