“Wicked: For Good” will get all the attention re: movies this week but I really liked “Rental Family.” The cinematography and score were beautiful, the acting was good and Brendan Fraser is a gem. Some movies make you think. This one made me feel.

you get the feeling that PEG and Jack Posobiec will not handle an outright papal encyclical on immigration well

The House bill being voted on today to require cash bail in DC is insane.

DC hasn’t had cash bail since 1992, and crime has plummeted since.

Our current system is near identical to federal law.

People should be held pretrial if they pose a safety risk — not because they are too poor to pay bail.

This is the most infuriating ProPublica story I’ve read recently. This woman had multiple seizures, a serious blood clot, severe hypertension (her BP was 174/116 at one point??), a previous stillbirth due to preeclampsia and she was still forced to continue her pregnancy until it killed her.
NEW:

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

It’s not unusual to have people in our lives who were not literally family but they were at least ad present in the backgrounds of our lives as our actual families. My aunt’s neighbor came to our family parties and told the kids about how the church bells rang the day they were born.
The Zohran "aunt" thing is the funniest hatchetjob of all time. There was a prominent person in my childhood named Uncle Bonehead who was just a friend of my uncle. To this day I have no idea what his actual name was. This nomenclature is not unusual in my culture (recovered alcoholic Masshole).

Karen is sharp, thoughtful and conscientious. If you’re hiring, you should definitely check out her work.
I was recently laid off by ARTnews, a few days before the theft at the Louvre. The terms of my TN work visa means I can't freelance unless I donate the funds to charity. I'm open to new FT roles in business reporting and communications, and am willing to relocate to other cities, including Toronto.
