Seeing another murder in Minneapolis, it's impossible to not feel deep despair. It is dangerous to protest ICE.

This is why economic action is so critical -- general strikes, not protests, is the only thing that can defeat fascism.

At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

The irony of everyone fawning over how Mark Carney is 'standing up' for Canada is that he is simultaneously eroding the few institutions that actually distinguish the Canadian state from the US, and those which theoretically could be used to shield Canadians from the disaster area to the south.

Or, Heated Rivalry only exists because of CanCon requirements. Otherwise CTV/Bell/Crave would have just imported another American show.
Just because it's successful doesn't mean that it isn't a product of the ecosystem it was created in.

#OTD in 1919, the Irish War of Independence began: the first meeting of the Dáil adopted the Declaration of Irish Independence & members of the Irish Volunteers (soon to be better known as the IRA) ambushed & expropriated arms from RIC officers employed by the British Crown.

She’s never hid this. Sure, she finally was explicit but Alberta, this is what you voted for...cloaked the guise of lower taxes.
Smith finally said it out loud...

She doesn't believe that government should be providing any services to Albertans, she believes that private companies should be used universally to provide services.

Faith groups should take care of the vulnerable.

If I were a PM who believed we were at a global rupture moment, upending decades of international order, and requiring totally new relations with the world, I probably wouldn’t cut my foreign affairs staffing and budget by 15%

Political illiteracy isn’t just annoying, it’s a tool to reinforce ignorance. Defunding schools, overworking the population, barring higher-education behind mounting debt and mainstreaming ignorant political discourse all naturally dovetail into people falling into unexamined positions.

Today, I told my students:

We're working under pressures and constraints that aren't of our own making and that we have limited power to control. So, let’s not pretend that social forces stop at the classroom door. Instead, let’s take care of each other with empathy and support.
Once again, how are we supposed to work through all this -- I mean, to do our day jobs?

we're getting all the downsides of cyberpunk (social alienation, ruthless hyper capitalism, digital mass surveillance state) but none of the promised upsides (cheap street food, cool jackets, super drugs that make you really fast and strong before they kill you)

Look, I love a good speech - I've alway been one to appreciate the skill and structure in powerful rhetoric. That said, I don't know if I can take the liberal patriotic nationalism his speech has unleashed on the ol' timeline this morning.
