Great piece from @supriya.bsky.social in @nationalobserver.com on how Meta’s app store age-verification scheme helps the company duck responsibility for youth safety and is a bad idea all around #cdnpoli #onlineharms www.nationalobserver.com/2025/11/27/o...

Ottawa’s budget bill repeals the Digital Services Tax. Many progressives are attacking the move, but they shouldn’t.

1/ It’s pretty obvious what’s happening here: Meta is pointing fingers at other companies to carry the weight of youth safety. And they're overestimating the support they'll have from policy-makers to help them in their squabble with Apple and Google: subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2025...

It's pretty obvious what's happening here. Meta is trying to push the responsibility for kids safety on to somebody else. Plus, their proposal won't really help. It creates new privacy and access problems.

And they might be overestimating how eager Canadian policymakers will be to help them...
Meta has reportedly boosted lobby efforts in Canada to push for new rules to implement age verification on the app store level, shifting responsibility to other technology companies like Apple and Google, rather than apps themselves, which would impact Meta’s business.
