I’m at #CIGF2025 listening to @mgeist.bsky.social, Mira Gillis, @vassb.bsky.social and Ulrike Bahr-Gedalia talking about digital sovereignty.

Geist warns that a lot of what we are seeing is “digital sovereignty theatre” with old policy asks being rebranded under the banner of sovereignty.

Quebec’s new streaming #Bill109 is the province’s latest showdown with Ottawa. Two sets of rules make zero sense. Unless we change course, it’s consumers who’ll pay the price in the end, either through higher costs or fewer choices www.iphoneincanada.ca/2025/11/06/n...

I always enjoy Tim's writing, but I don’t love the way his latest Globe piece downplays the real benefits. For example, estimates suggest that YouTube alone supports 28,000 FTEs in Canada. Hard to be flippant about the value there! www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

.@MarkJCarney wants Canada to be the best place in the world to invest. In tech, we’ve screwed it up before with protectionism that scared folks off. We can’t afford to mess it up again.

The #DST never really made sense and was always going to be passed on to Canadians.

The budget *references* DST repeal a few times and even says CRA will wind down the team working on it – but there's nothing formally repealing it in the Ways and Means Motion.

Oh, and: the feds will create an Office of Digital Transformation to push “sovereign AI tools” in government. The new digital sovereignty paper feels pragmatic–so I expect room for global tech tools alongside homegrown ones. But more from me on this soon.

And, third, is the government's promise to formally rescind the Digital Services Tax (or DST), which is hinted at in the budget but not actually reflected in the Ways and Means Motion. The tax never really made sense, so will be checking the BIA to see how they follow through

Another is a series of investments in AI infrastructure. Will be watching to see how they can help support Canada's tech sector and global competitiveness, and complement existing private sector investment

The first is a promise to introduce legislation to regulate stablecoins. Will be following closely to see if policy-makers can strike the right balance between consumer safeguards and innovation.
