8/ Great reporting on this from @politico.com's @mickeydjuric.bsky.social who included alternative proposals that are pointed in a much better direction subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2025...

7/ A better approach is to leave this up to specific apps and developers. Trying to impose a single technical solution to prevent kids from seeing bad stuff on the internet is ineffective. We need to teach them how to understand how to use technology safely and responsibly.

6/ There's also this thing called *a browser,* which isn't an app. So if the app store isn't giving the kids what they want, they can try accessing services through the good ol' world wide web.

5/ Not to mention that a lot of young people don't have a dedicated device. The family iPad gets shared around, for example. How does age verification at the app store help when multiple people of different generations are sharing devices?
November 25, 2025 at 8:35 PM
4/ The other problem is that it introduces privacy issues. For the age verification process to be meaningful, app stores would have to collect serious personal data about all users, such as government ID. This creates a massive trove of data that's very attractive to hackers.

3/ Plus, putting the onus on app stores actually relieves application developers of their responsibility to build age-appropriate software.

2/ But their idea won't actually make the internet safer for youth. The right approach is putting the onus on app developers to make their services safe for young people. They're best positioned to ID risks unique to their platforms.

4/ With the G7 security meetings happening this weekend, it’d be easy to dismiss this as political theatre. But given recent floor crossings and stalled progress on trade, this may be a temperature-taking exercise. Civil society and other experts will need to push back hard.

3/ Minister Gary Anandasangaree similarly doubled down on the approach from the press conference, demanding Conservative Party support the legislation and get the lawful access regime in place.

2/ The very next day, they were back at it. In QP, Minister @stevenmackinnon.bsky.social accused the opposition of holding the bill hostage, telling the Whip to “take their boot off the neck of C-2” so the government could pass the lawful access provisions www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentView...
