Living in Lheidlih T’enneh territory

(he/him/il/anti-fascist)
Like any technological transition, it is slow at first until it is overwhelmingly detrimental to try and maintain the status quo.
I first visited Denmark’s “renewable energy islands” of Samsø and Aerø in 2005, when clean power was coming up on 20%. The islands were being used as living labs for what’s now called net zero. Even Danish officials worried about how to get past 50%. Then the transition overwhelmed the skeptics
Energy transitions can happen faster than we think:

In 2000 almost 90% of Denmark's electricity was from fossil fuels.

In 2024 less than 10% of Danish electricity was from fossil fuels.

Canada’s top political leaders are climate deniers. There’s no such thing as “decarbonized” oil and no environmentally conscious way to increase fossil fuel production.

Mark Carney and his government are sacrificing the climate and baking in worse natural disasters in the hope of short-term profit.
People who care about climate change are “dreaming nostalgically about the past.” - Minister Hodgson

Gotcha. That explains a lot.

One thought about the proposed new bitumen pipeline: avoiding the worst impacts of climate change isn't a partisan issue. It is in **everyone's** best interest (esp. future generations) to diversify the energy supply and focus on renewables. Fossil fuels are a dead end in so many ways.

Canada just signed a deal with Alberta to build a bitumen pipeline through northern BC.

IMHO Carney has underestimated how badly a pipeline deal with Smith will go over, especially here in BC. I’m old enough to remember the RCMP staking out Northern Gateway pipeline opposition meetings.

I appreciate this defense of BC’s north coast, and I hope for consistency.

But we don’t need to “unlock prosperity” there. It already provides prosperity for all of BC, Canada, and the planet.

We just need to leave it alone, monitor its health, and let it do what it’s already doing.

British Columbians know our coast and the opportunities it can unlock better than anybody else.

We need to be at table to protect our coast, unlock prosperity and ensure a bright future for all Canadians.

Hi Bluesky 👋

Small life update: I’m at the centre of a multimillion dollar lawsuit in Alberta launched by a failed candidate for Jason Kenney’s UCP

It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history

I’m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you 🧵

Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.
I had 9 meetings about students using Chat GPT/LLMs on their papers today.
