Someone in Maryland needs to explain to me why car registration renewal fees are so high. Shouldn’t have to pay nearly $600 for a 3-year renewal.

Y’know, it’s okay to just repeat the noun phrases you used before instead of using “the former” and “the latter” to point back to them—especially if the original noun phrases are actually *shorter* than three syllables each.

I went to see a game of vintage base ball, a growing retro-version of the sport, played by the rules of 1863. Underhand pitching. No gloves. A ball caught on a hop is an out. Hardly any strikeouts or walks. Baggy uniforms. Lots of facial hair.

Vintage base ball: the charm of a sport where the 1860s never ended
In New York’s Hudson Valley, a league plays by old-school rules – with underhand pitching, no gloves, and questionable facial hair – to revive the game’s early quirks

#PlainLanguage encourages candor—especially in technical content. It meets busy readers’ needs of having direct, simple, clear, AND engaging content they can easily consume.

As I routinely advise the writers I work with: We want to seek to *inform*, not to impress.

Understanding information easily *is* a universal human right, not a privilege a writer bestows on their audience.

With #PlainLanguage, we want to seek:
– simple, not simplistic
– clear, not condescending.
– concise, not (necessarily) short

#PlainLanguage is “wording, structure and design are so clear that intended readers can easily
1. find what they need,
2. understand what they find, and
3. use that information”

Put simply: #PlainLanguage principles emphasize placing the most important information first — prioritizing the readers’ needs and what *they* need and want to know. That also means plain language is dynamic and changes depending on who the intended audience is.

We all appreciate learning information simply, quickly, and succinctly, right? #PlainLanguage encourages that by catering to what we, the reader, need to best understand information in a given context.

#PlainLanguage de-centers the writer; yes, they have a message to express — but that message will fall into a black hole if readers can’t or don’t understand it or (worse) don’t even want to look at it because the text is daunting and unrelatable.

The shows @guster.bsky.social played were incredible and the protest was perfect. So glad the show went on.
"Our challenge, beyond putting on an indelible show, was to find a way to make our dissension clear, with dignity and creativity," writes Guster's Ryan Miller:
