the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1

In this tough and moving essay, Caroline Kennedy's 35-year-old daughter Tatiana Schlossberg reveals that she is terminally ill with leukemia. She has some choice words about how her cousin Bobby has made the limited time she has left worse. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
A Battle with My Blood
When I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first thought was that this couldn’t be happening to me, to my family.

My dissertation examined the spread of misinformation related to science topics. I defended in 2016, and after that year’s U.S. elections (and what I’d learned in my research) I had to mostly walk away from those topics for my own sanity.

This is where my colleagues are now.

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

The U.S. government is now inarguably spreading medical disinformation that is going to kill babies preferentially.

Period.

This is an INTOLERABLE. UNPRECEDENTED. DANGEROUS. ATTACK. ON ALL OF US.

On the morning of Thursday, November 13th ICE hit a dozen locations in Pomona within around 90 minutes. Several people were kidnapped.

They’re still very much here and terrorizing communities.
People have largely tried to act like ICE/CBP failed and retreated from LA and that is completely untrue. If it weren’t for the relentless coverage of places like @lataco.bsky.social these stories would be completely under the radar.
ICE has been raiding my neighborhood and surrounding ones for the last couple of weeks now. They commandeered my local church (against the pastor's will) for a staging site and raided supermarkets, parks, Goodwills, bus stops, you name it.

The national media's been silent. So has @mayor.lacity.gov.

The Mapping Deportations project has an animated timeline of who gets deported in the US. In the 1910s the US starts deporting more Mexicans than any other group & doesn't let up through the present day. You can follow which groups are the targets of immigrant panics pretty clearly.

The cool sh*t we could have as a civilization if minoritized researchers could just DO SCIENCE with their energy. Whew.
Imagine the things we could do with our time if we didn’t have to do this bsky.app/profile/chan...
I did my job. And then I did a job that never should have been my responsibility afterwards, sending emails and having meetings about how this was allowed to happen in the first place. Other women scholars had to spend their time explaining to Aspen leadership why this was not ok.

I did not consider myself particularly naive about working in academia, but I will never, as long as I live, understand a system that forces Claudine Gay to resign in digrace but not Larry Summers.

Doing a data workshop next week in the Digital Scholarship lab….brought to you by Del Taco. 🌮🌮🌮
I feel like we’d be better served investing hundreds of millions of dollars per year in some sort of labor and economic statistics bureau.

But what do I know?

On an unrelated note, according to the Wingstop Crime Report, arson is down 50% this year. So that’s something.

@adamschiff.com @padilla.senate.gov Your mailboxes are full. I hope this means you are busy with your staff holding firm on the ACA funding.
Exactly this — caving for nothing makes all that pain for nothing.

Further, them caving lends credence to this being just some political scrum when it’s actually much more fundamental than that!

Call those senators, please.
Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.
