Finished my first book of our beach holiday, and it was excellent. A thrillingly current multi-generational epic about power and wealth in Malaysia and Australia. Poetic and immersive: I could feel myself in the jungle, in the streets of Kota Kinabalu, the patterned palm plantations.
FIERCELAND by Omar Musa. A book with a cover of weave or batik in geometric patterns of pink, blue and gold.

My mum and I made a bombe alaska for Christmas lunch today. The base worked really well, but the Italian meringue didn't set properly and we couldn't find the blowtorch to brulee it, so we flambéd it instead, and that just melted the meringue even more.

Still tasty.
The base, which is a two-layer cherry ice cream encased in a layer of frozen chocolate cake. It's sitting on a cake stand and my chubby hands are fluttering around the edges for some reason A saucepan of flaming Cointreau being delicately dumped over the bombe, now covered in a slightly melting pile of glossy Italian meringue The aftermath of the flambéing, showing some scorched meringue at the bottom, and a lot of melty white marshmallow meringue at the top. The bombe cut into cross section, showing the two layers of ice cream: one a deep purple red, which is a cherry brandy sorbet, and the bottom which is cherry semi-freddo. There's a pretty thick layer of chocolate cake around the outside and the meringue is by now starting to slough off the edges.

The terrible, gross irony of a hardware store, literally the definition of a store for handmade and DIY of both novice and professionals, using AI to make an ad.

This sort of thing bugs me a lot. There are valuable use cases for machine learning, involving pattern recognition and sifting thru a ton of data quickly. Totally valid + useful.

These get lumped together with useless brain-eating plagiarizing chatbots under the umbrella term "A.I."

Years ago I interviewed @actordougjones.bsky.social at Dragon Con & asked him what kind of movies he would like to do that didn't involve prosthetics. He told me his dream was to do a cosy Christmas movie where he got to wear a nice sweater.

Fish Poem
FISH POEM Stella Sacco My best friend in Catholic grade school, Tony, Lived on one side of the highway to Pittstield And between the sets of lanes, Set deep down a sharp incline, There was a little stream Running from one corrugated pipe to another And when I'd come visit we'd cross the road And we'd climb down And we'd get our hands and shoes wet And we'd hunt for cool rocks. But one day we found a big fish instead. It was in a pool slightly deeper and wider Than the rest of the stream And we were mystified. It was big, much bigger than we figured A fish in a stream that narrow should be. Not that we had ever seen a fish there before. It was alive and so still That we were able to reach into the water And stroke it And feel its slick scales And so we sang songs to it And we called it a gentle giant And it didn't swim away And we thought it was a miracle And we wondered where it would go from there And we went back inside. The next time I saw Tony I brought up our gentle giant And he looked at me with a sort of bladed pity And said "It was dying, dummy." He explained he had talked to his mom And his mom had said The fish came from somewhere else And had gotten stranded in that stream somehow And had nothing to eat anymore And not enough room to swim And the reason it didn't swim away from us Is because it couldn't swim away from us. It couldn't swim anywhere. We were the giants, not the fish, And we had played with it As it was dying. I got sad. Maybe it was able to go downstream, I offered. Tony countered with a "How?" For which I did not have a great answer. But I just think If I was dying, As l am every day, I would like someone Who thought I was miraculous To touch me And feel my soft skin And sing to me While I went.

Headline: SAVED BY STOPPARD Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec 1), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: “If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?” With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of “adjuvant systemic chemotherapy”, and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients’ survival.
