remember thinking a few seasons into Gus's tenure how lucky I was, as a middle-aged fan with no memory of Barfield, that the *worst* Auburn hire of my lifetime directly resulted in both a national championship and an obvious, successful candidate to replace him

that debt has been so freaking repaid
Our second head-coach in a row who behaved as a saboteur.

62 points against a low-rung FBS-caliber opponent

Freeze putting together the offense he did with the talent he had would be in cheese-wheel "not even mad, just impressed" territory if not for the fact that I was, am, and always will be extremely mad

after two possessions each way comfortable saying I don't need to know the Mercer coach's name to know he'd be a better hire for Auburn than Durkin

So last night absolutely rocked, and the Paraguay game didn't rock a whole lot less

the job was to get us pumped for 2026. I, for one, am hella pumped. My column (no, really):
So that’s why the USMNT hired Mauricio Pochettino 🇺🇸

A near second-choice XI put five past Uruguay, set piece routines looked sharp, a tactical approach has crystalized, and Gio Reyna returned with real impact.

Ten Windows, No. 3: So that’s why the USMNT hired Mauricio Pochettino, huh?
The United States has never looked better under Pochettino. Is the team rounding into form at just the right time?

1. slouching us ever further towards college athletics bethlehem

2. giving Matt an excuse to write a banger of a piece, give him money to write more of them
November 19, 2025 at 5:45 PM
kinda think Poch should've moved past the "opportunities" stage to the "get the guys who will play next summer on-field reps together" stage by now

(admittedly happy for more Aidan Morris minutes)
14.1 - With an average of 14.1 caps entering the match, this is the least experienced starting XI the #USMNT has named in an official FIFA international window within a year of appearing in a World Cup since October 2005 vs. Panama (7.6). Opportunities.

turned this on as a prurient Hawks fan

comfortably the most "1-seed takes on 16-seed that finished 6th in the MAAC and got hot at the conference tourney" NBA game I've seen
In terms of overall sad tromboneness, this is some elite stuff here. Pelicans are at home against the defending champions, playing in front of an arena that I will generously describe as half full, and are getting absolutely bodied.

down 22, final quarter of the final game of the road trip, Risacher out, win the game anyway

the Hawks have

something approximating

the juice????
Easily the most impressive win of the season

NAW put the team on his back in the 4Q

changing of the guard in American curling tonight, but not just about what happened in the best-of-3 at Trials. Team Casper has been lights-out all season.

So has Shuster tbf, but this wasn't an upset in terms of anything but experience. Thrilling to see Casper get this good this soon
Danny Casper, Luc Violette, Ben Richardson, Aidan Oldenburg

They need to qualify the country in, but that’s the USA curling team for the 2026 Olympics

Long live John Shuster

tell me before the game Auburn shoots worse than expected from the line and UH shoots better than expected on away-from-the-rim 2s, I'd tell you Auburn loses by 10 at least. Instead I'm telling you Auburn was *at least* as good as Houston today, maybe better

excellent performance

damn fine half of basketball for Auburn vs. Houston, think AU created better shots, Cougs hit a bunch of tough middies you want them taking. Need to force more than 2 turnovers in 2H, tho

have to catch up on the first 70 minutes later, but another dub against a decent opponent with a whole bunch of US first-teamers missing is

well

it would be encouraging if we allowed friendlies to feel encouraging

Someone who is not Auburn is going to hire Bob Chesney and it won't be surprising if several seasons later Auburn will wish they had
November 15, 2025 at 11:27 PM
*guess* I can't complain about Quin when the Hawks are playing this well, offense without Trae is this crisp, vibes are good, etc

but these are some "Mike Woodson with his team in foul trouble"-caliber rotation decisions
Got into it on the pod but now the numbers are in...

the Wallace-Krejci-Kennard lineup was -4 in 15 (!!!!) minutes on Thursday.... even while shooting 11-22 from three.
new locked on hawks posting now...

- jalen johnson's historic night
- onyeka okongwu's historic night
- vit krejci's heater
- rocky defense that peaked at the right time
- much more

never in my life have I seen two catches that good on a single drive, much less a game-winning drive with no timeouts for the undefeated No. 2 team in the country

never

not ever

"last camp until March, it's time to finally bring Scally and Reyna back into the fold. But not *you* Yunus, we'd rather see Sean Zawadski instead" does not feel like a positive omen for Musah, sadly
Notable selections/omissions
IN: Gio Reyna, Joe Scally, Sebastian Berhalter, Jonathan Klinsmann, John Tolkin, Auston Trusty, Sean Zawadzki
OUT: Chris Richards, Weston McKennie, Matt Turner, Yunus Musah, Noahkai Banks #USMNT

maybe not the best part, but one of the very good parts is knowing he'll never have his vengeance against Diego Pavia

Gus Malzahn finished the 2019 regular season 9-3, with wins over eventual 11-2 Pac-12 champ Oregon and then-10-1 Alabama. All three Ls were to teams in the final SP+ top 7. Auburn's own SP+ finish was 9th.

So many Auburn fans wanted Gus fired that a year later, he was.

Please spare us, Hugh
after his 34th game as Auburn’s head coach — one in which his offense did not score a single touchdown against the second-worst defense in the SEC — Hugh Freeze said he wished he could ask for more patience

Gene Chizik only got 25 games after he won a national championship
Observation: Kentucky 10, Auburn 3
There's not much more to say at this point.
