As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed “dangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SF—I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.

Reasons the Coalition should go all in on climate change and energy transition – it’s the only way to win back urban seats, plus it is a traditional conservative value to prioritise nature and the long term. Reasons it isn’t – the greedy rich want more money now.

Climate change issues aside, I'm stunned that the ALP didn't link the North West Shelf approval to the gas industry's social license and/or their paying more tax. Labour is usually smart enough to take opportunities for reform when it sees them. #auspol
