During WWII, Gen. Patton didn't like the way Stars and Stripes cartoonist Bill Mauldin drew Willie and Joe as scruffy, unkempt characters.
He wanted to ban the cartoon from the newspaper, but Gen. Eisenhower intervened. It's the "soldier's paper," he said. "Leave it be."
